I didn't see any similarities between Dead Poets & 3 Idiots -- at
least not while I was watching. Superficially, there are similarities
-- student life, someone commits suicide, etc. But Dead Poets was
centered on the teacher, whereas 3 Idiots is about the students. And
DP, despite Robin Williams was a very serious movies; whereas 3I is
much more of a comedy.
I really didn't see anything similar -- and until I read your post,
the thought wouldn't have entered my mind.
Now 5 Point & 3I similarities are a completely different matter
altogether.

Don't you think Amir played the same role of Robin williams? I
personally think so... Ofcourse, Amir played a longer role(otherwise
the movie wouldn't have been a hit :).

Really? There are some funny scenes in DPS Too... But those are no
where near the excellent humor of 3idiots. However, the message of
both movies are the same. The only thing that seperates both movies is
the ending. In dead poets society, the evil wins. In our bollycat, the
good heros wins :-D

Neha(wondering if there are any guys as cute as Todd Anderson ;-) )
Romeo & Juliet would be a comedy were the two lovers to ride away into
the Veronian sunset. I remember doing an analysis of the play (school
work), where one had to figure out the events which if different would
have converted the play into a comedy (i.e., the lovers lives are
spared), starting from the end and working backwards.. such as, what
if Romeo had got the note from the Friar, he would have known of
Juliet's plan to fake her own death. Or if the idiot had actually
checked her pulse before rushing off to the tomb.. Probably a few
more, but I can't remember :-)
But, that those events don't happen fundamentally make the play a
tragedy, and completely change the watching experience.
Saying that the difference is minor, is like saying that India's
experience in the 1983 World Cup was similar to their experience in
the 2007 World Cup, with the minor difference that India won the 83
Cup but got eliminated in the first round by the Bangles in the 07
Cup...

Very subtle point, Neha. Yes it could be inspired in the sense that the
hero was a creative and brave person, going against the very powerful and
heartless establishment. You really have to be idiotic, to take up arms
against the evil and also fatheaded Viruses and their smelly subjects, the
Silencers.
Thanks for making this point.
