Clearly shows that Srinath is Ganguly's preferred addition to the SL
squad for the WC - which is very sensible considering his experience
and seeing the form he displayed recently in England.
Of course we don't know whether BCCI or Srinath himself will agree.
Even if Srinath is in, I still think it would be a good idea to have
Agarkar come in for the final instead of Laxman or Kumble so that our
bowling is improved :-)

COLOMBO: Ashish Nehra will not play the final of the ICC Champions
Trophy to be held here next Sunday, following his injury during
Wednesday’s semi-final against South Africa.
The Indian seamer had split the webbing between the middle and ring
fingers of his bowling hand while trying to effect a runout during his
second spell. Although he returned, with his hand plastered, to bowl a
short spell, it was found later that he needed a few sutures to join
the flesh.
On Thursday evening, as the team celebrated their semi-final victory
at the hotel poolside, Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly told reporters
that Nehra would not be playing the final.
Ganguly also said that he had asked the BCCI to send Javagal Srinath
as a replacement, but hastened to add that it was only a suggestion.
"I leave the decision to the board and selectors," he said.
"John (Wright) and I discussed the situation and felt that Srinath was
the right choice."
That the Indian skipper sought Srinath means the Karnataka speedster
is likely to be preferred ahead of Ajit Agarkar because if that were
not the case, then it would not have been Srinath but either Tinu
Yohanan or Balaji who would have been requisitioned.
The door, however, is not completely closed for Agarkar, for
speculation is rife here that he could still come in for Anil Kumble
who had two mediocre games. With a little luck the leg-spinner could
have finished at least with the wicket of Jacques Kallis who was
dropped by Laxman in the slips and then Russel Tiffin refused to refer
a good lbw shout to the third umpire.
Agarkar is in most likely for Nehra who has been injured.
Another reason is, Nehra has not shown any improvement in
his bowling in this ICC trophy tournament and there is
some pressure on him to be replaced. Ganguly's suggestion
to the board is not practical, but before the selection
of this tour to SL, he should have been picked. There was
similar talk about Mohanty's absence in the English tour
after Nehra's failure in England with the ball.
I think, the rift between Ganguly and Sachin could still
be there and his preference for a player who has retired
is something that has never happened in Indian or any
other countries cricket history. A captain usually
laments about a players retirement but nevers persuades
with such a relentful approach.
Srinath is a better choice than Agarkar if Srinath had
not retired and gotten picked for the tournament. It appears
a bit unprofessional on Ganguly's part to say that he
prefers a retired player to comeback, which is not
possible, instead of a young 24 year old seamer like
Agarkar who is the future of Indian cricket.
I would drop Ganguly not on grounds of performance but
unprofessional conduct outside the playing field. Ganguly
is a great ODI player and would be difficult to replace,
but just like match fixing or any other misconduct related
to cricket, his statement to the press to bring back
Srinath appears unrealistic and needs to be disciplined.

Nikhil
why is it not possible? is it against the law?
do you recall imran khan coming back out of retirement?
in the nba, we have seen magic and michael come out of retirement (twice!).
why not srinath? even in the twilight of his career, he is better than aggie
at his peak.
he is obviously in playing shape, having bowled quite a bit (and quite well)
in the last few games of the county season for leics.
if he is willing, why not?

Where have all the people gone my honey,
Where have all the people gone today.
There's no need for you to be worrying about all those people,
You never see those people anyway.

Retired from Tests has nothing to do with ODIs.

You mean relentless I presume.

How does getting picked for the tournament make Agarkar a better choice?
If you said that he is a better choice because of his batting and fielding
that would hold some muster. Or do you think by practising at the
nets he has become a better bet for the finals? You realize that he has
not played a single match this tourney, for better or for worse.

And why is that so? Srinath has not retired from ODIs. Ganguly says what
he believes, anything wrong with that? Unprofessional? my foot!

God save Indian cricket, if an erratic medium pacer, who cannot perform
to anywhere near his potential after several years is the future.

Thanks god, you are nowhere near the selection committee.

I fail to realize where the misconduct is? Asking for a player who he
believes is a better bet might be unrealistic, but then you would
have to ban any captain of a losing side who says routinely before
a series that they will win and have a sporting chance. Unrealistic
statements are not misconduct, per se.

If Agarkar is "the future of Indian cricket", let us try to win as many Tests as
we can while he is still out of the team. He still has a role in the ODI team,
but naturally Ganguly is reluctant to change a winning combination unless it is
for someone overwhelmingly superior like Srinath.

And exactly which regulation did it violate ?
Like the one "1. Anyone that puts the chances of selection of Agarkar must be
disciplined." ?

?? Why?
Ganguly is a shrewd fella. This maybe his way of proving to Srinath that he
wants him back in the one-day team also but the selectors are not allowing
him. So that when he is back, Srinath will have nothing against any team
members, and that is the way it should be. And by just making the call and
not replacing anyone with Srinath in the finals, no player will have
anything against Srinath either. Everyone is happy. Srinath will be back, in
the proper and formal way, for the WI series and will go to NZ series.
Thankfully SCG plays these games, keeping in mind the benefit to the team
( I strongly believe so. flames will be redirected to /dev/null ) Agarkar
has to realize that if he should realize its importance as far as his own
career is concerned.

That's a fair answer, but you've gone to more effort than strictly necessary
in debunking Nikhil's argument. Pointing out that Srinath retired only from
Test cricket would have been enough for me...
