So I have in my hot little hands tickets to Sydney and I'm planning to
be there to watch the 4th test. I'm leaving on the 5th but I figure
that 3 days will be plenty for the test to finish :-)

What are the best seats in the house and how expensive are they ? I
heard something about the "Bradman stand" .. is there a good website I
can read about it .. including where each stand is relative to the
wicket ? Behind the bowler's arm would be good :-)

Where can I buy tickets ? Is it already too late ?

Woohoo !!

Although tickets have been on sale for a while, so you won't get the prime seats
(in fact, you probably won't get anything in the stands for the first two or
three days).

The website lists amongst others the concourse stands AF1,AF2,AF3
.. alcohol-free. Although the idea of an alcohol-free stand is
ethically questionable, it looks like that is the best bet as a good
position from which to watch the cricket.

Is it a regular stand ? Any positives ? Apart from that there is the
slightly more expensive "silver" seats .. which are listed as being
part of the Bradman+O'reilly but I farare only the O'Reilly stands ..

The O'Reilly Stand would be the worst of the Under-cover stands
to sit in at the SCG due to the sun blaring in your eyes. First
bet would be the Bradman Stand as you're behind the wicket and
look directly at the scoreboard. The next bet would be the
Churchill Stand but you might be obsecure from the scoreboard
there but you are behind the wicket. Following that is the
Brewongle Stand. Watching side-on but you get 100% scoreboard
viewing and opposite the sun. New Year is generally bushfire
season in Sydney, so the sun is blazing.

Of the concourse. I sat in the area in front of the Churchill
Stand two years ago and had a great view of the action and the
scoreboard. The shade started to come after the luncheon break.
The year before I sat a touch under the Doug Walters Stand in the
concourse and it was alright but not the greatest view point. If
you get concourse seats and want to avoid the sun, I would look
to around the border of the Churchill and Brewongle Stands and
towards the back if you can.

Avoid the Doug Walters Stand unless you want a beauty of a
suntan.

The great thing about the Sydney Cricket Ground is that it's the
best viewing ground in Australia for any sport. It's a magical
place and if it's the first time you've been there, just soak up
the beauty and history of the arena.

When Steve Waugh walks out to bat, just remember that Don Bradman
and Victor Trumper have also walked out of exactly the same
pavilion.

It's my favourite ever sporting arena. It's fitting Steve Waugh
chose Sydney to be his last Test. Greg Chappell, Dennis Lillee,
Rod Marsh and Mark Taylor have all chosen Sydney in the past and
never been let down.

Matt.

Cool!! I was wondering where u had disappeared ... so all set for the
farewell? I can see that SCG is getting ready for it
http://www.sydneycricketground.com.au/

Hope u get the tickets somehow and have a gr8 time. ofcourse a
matchreport. I believe Bharat Rao also is heading towards Aus to see a
Sachin straight drive and for the last time, a stevewaugh square drive
through point, then just stand at the crease, adjust peak of his
helmet, look up at the bowler, then walk down and tap the pitch with
his shiny MRF 'conqueror' bat, come back adjust his red rag in the
pocket and take guard again.

Hope he gets a century there and crossed AB' record at SCG.

Matt gave a lot of detail, but I'll add that all seating at the SCG is reserved
- the concourse seats are simply the low vantage point seating around the ground
in front of the stands. They are not a "stand" as such, but are sloped pretty
well so that you won't be blocked by the people in front of you.

The concourse in front of the Bradman is an excellent viewing area. The
onlyareas to really avoid IMHO are the O'Reilly, Messenger and Walters
stand. The concourse in front of the scorboard and the Walters stands
aren't too bad for viewing (the scoreboard is better) but these areas are
where the old hill used to be and I wouldn't take kids there myself but
you'll still get a good view.

Fab news that. My travel abroad plans/dreams have been only linked to
sports venues. First, I want to go to the caribbean Islands, and drink
n dance away to calypso in the stands watching Lara blast away.
plus go to Eng and enter through the Grace gates to Lords, sit
silently with the members, and watch intently the proceedings.and
after the game head towards Lords Tavern but also importantly watch a
few county matches, with the two men, and a bitch, preferably of
feminine rather then canine species and , preferably Yorkshire vs
Lancashire (alas I now hear the sterotypes of great contest of yore
have all dissipated), jump over to Wimbledon , sit there in the
middle. with a strawberry n icecream and just keep moving my head left
.. right... and then down under, maybe at MCG, or SCG.

Just today, I reserved my airline tix for Dec 23 Newark->Melbourne,
Dec 31 Melbourne->Sydney, Jan 7 Sydney->Newark. Haven't done
a damn thing yet -- haven't thought about tix, where to stay, etc. I
may change the tix to just see Sydney, but thats a lot of dosh for just
one Test -- in which case, I may wait to see if we get clobbered in
the first 2 Tests and cancel the whole thingie...

However, it seemed rather serendipitous that UNITED flies into
Melbourne from LAX and then on to Sydney and back to LAX;
seemed an omen to me, that I should go for both Tests (somehow
the better half didn't seem to follow the conclusive logic that
were it the other way around, United flying into Sydney and out
of Mel, that it would be a lot more travel, so I *HAD* to do both).

Sai -- send me email at raoUNDERSCOREbharatATyahooDOTcom
and we can see if we can get together -- most bummed out thing to
watch a Test match solo -- so at least at Sydney.

Anyone planning to be at Melbourne and has tix:-) I guess I should
be able to get in nevertheless, but will have nose bleed:-)

Warning about the sun in the concourse--go with the anticipation you will
fry--broad hat, long shorts (to cover the upper legs, plenty sunscreen
(Australian made--usually better quality for the sun here--more intense
than northern hemisphere), plenty of fluids. Darker skin helps but my son is
part Indian and has got equally fried in past games.

The concourse in front of Bradman is excellent viewing but there is no
relief from the sun on hot days. Great venue--enjoy it but if you don't
prepare well it can be hard to survive 3 days (unless you are English who
seem to be able to avoid all the above precautions and still be screaming
all day while lobster red from the waist up).

Sai, dont get the sunscreen made in Queensland though. Its biased
towards attracting more heat.

SCG SUN is not biased at all, It radiates its warmth towards everybody
regardless of race, colour, birth.

I'd agree with all that, except the concourse in front of the scoreboard, etc
isn't as bad as it once was - I think reserved seating has broken up the groups
of yobbos somewhat - that and the light beer. I don't mind bays 29-31 - they get
some decent shade later in the day.

Thanks John !

Excellent advice I'm sure. I'll have to go well-prepared. I've seen
games in MAC and Chinnaswamy in India. MAC got quite hot but the
breeze comes in from the sea in the afternoon and it gets pleasant,
especially when you're in the D-stand or opposite, in the MCC stands
near the pavilion ..

On the other hand, this summer I hiked up Half-dome, Mt St Helens, and
all the way up to Mt Whitney - the tallest peak in the contiguous
US. All in blazing sun ... so hopefully I'll manage.

miss a marketing moment, wud in the rain, have Steve Waugh along
with his daughter emerge from the middle of the ground, and atop a

Mark Taylor wud later allege that waugh had struck a deal with CA, and
it was artificial rain, arranged by CA n Waugh and Gavin Robertson.
