When I had a few beers with Rohan Chandran and Travis Basevi in the 90s, Travis had the latest, state-of-the-art pager that he'd programmed to update him with scores from matches from all over the world. At one point it buzzed and he told us that so-and-so from Sri Lanka had just got his double century. I was amazed!
I still find it slightly surreal that a lot of the impetus came about was because Mick Jagger wanted to watch a Sharjah tournament that England were playing in but wasn't being broadcast to the UK. And he was willing to pay to make it happen.
