The feat of taking 100 first-class wickets was achieved every English season
from 1866 to 1971 inclusive, war years excepted. In 1969 the County
Championship suffered the first of several drastic recent prunings, being
reduced from 28 to 24 three-day matches per county. The program was further
reduced to 20 matches (1972-76), since when it has involved 22 matches
(1977-82), 24 matches (1983-87) and 22 matches (1988-92). The current format
of 17 four-day mathces was introduced in 1993. The following is the list of

I thought that Courtney Walsh took over 100 wickets in 1986 (something
like 118), and seem to remember WCM speculating on whether it would
help him break in the WI side.

A lot of water under a lot of bridges since then...

These two were the last to do the cricketer's double of 1, 000 runs and 100 wickets in a season.

117 14.05 1984 RJ Hadlee Nottinghamshire
125 18.31 1988 1988 FD Stephenson Nottinghamshire

Cooper and Stephenson seem to be the only instance on this list of team
mates doing in the same season.

How common was this before the number of matches was reduced?

1936 153 WH Copson 121 TB Mitchell
1938 131 TB Mitchell 101 WH Copson

1947 113 GH Pope 104 C Gladwin
1948 125 C Gladwin 100 GH Pope
1949 110 C Gladwin 103 HL Jackson

1952 151 C Gladwin 114 HL Jackson

1957 138 HL Jackson 104 C Gladwin
1958 135 HL Jackson 117 C Gladwin

Very. In the 1950s you could bet that at least 2 out of the famous four - Bedser, Loader, Laker and Lock - would take 100 wickets in the same season and ofetn it was 3 and sometimes 4. RH

I seem to have missed the 1880s out altogether, but I originally started
the table with the 1890s but then found Lancashire had one instance in
the 1880s. So, I added a column for the 1880s, but headed it with
'1870s' in error.

Agnew's entry isn't good.

By his own admission, he was a pisspoor bowler at Test level.

Cheers Brian, that's fantastic. So 313 times in c.80 seasons until the
reduction in the matches in '69 = about 4 times a year on average.

Since we are dredging up a list that is nearly 20 years old, we ought to
add two, more recent examples:

Just back from holiday - hence the late response.

I think it would have been quite common. IIRC, there was one season in
the 1960s when Trueman, Nicholson, Illingworth and Don Wilson of
Yorkshire all reached 100 f-c wickets. There were 28 Championship
matches, but they may also have played in a few other f-c matches, for
instance against the universities and/or touring sides.

Nicholson 29, Trueman 33, Illingworth 27, Wilson 31

Fred took 3 wickets for TN Pearce's XI (v WI) & one for an England XI (v
RoW). Four of Illy's wkts came in 2 WI Tests.
