On Saturday, June 03,1995, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, 20 year
old Greg Hobson, twin brother of Wayne Hobson died after being struck on the
head by a cricket ball while batting in a league match of the British Columbia
Mainland Cricket League (BCMCL). Apparenlty, Greg decided to take his helmet
off since there were only two balls to end the game and unfortunately he had
missed the ball in attempting a hook shot and the ball had struck the back of
his head. He was immediately taken to the hospital in an ambulance with his
twin brother holding his hand. An hour later Greg had died even before they
could perform a CAT SCAN. Has this ever happened in cricket anywhere in the
world?

Unfortunately it sure has happened before. I remember reading
a newspaper report a few years ago about a cricketer who
"retired dead" after being hit by a bouncer. This happened
in Sri Lanka in the late eighties if memory serves me right.

Somebody(Vicky???) with a sharper memory than me can please throw more
light on this.

Regards,
Rajesh.

All opinions are mine.

I think that someone (can't remember who but I think he was an ex-1st class
cricketer) died after being hit on the side of the head during a league
match at Whitehaven, Cumbria. If I remember rightly the ball got up VERY

unexpectedly and although he was able
to walk off unaided he died later in hospital. This took place a couple of
seasons ago.

BTW Can anyone tell me who the WI manager is please?

Cheers

It was Ian Folley. Ex-Lancashire all-rounder (off-spin). Good player and a
really nice bloke. He was 31.

Folley apparently died due to a heart attack brought on by the
operation rather than the injury (which was a fractured eye-socket).
Not that it makes a lot of difference.

Thanks for describing me that way. I could not recall this
incident :(

The Sri Lankan guy was Gemini (or Gamini) Ratnayake. My mom told me that a
Ratnayake had been killed, and I immediately thought of Rumesh Ratnayake.
But I read the papers and saw that I was not Rumesh but the other guy.

I concur absolutely with Sunand's point of view. I was struck by the fact
that no messages of sympathy appeared regarding this tragic death. Greg
Hobson was only 20 years old. That is very sad and I would like to extend
my sympathies to his family and cricketing friends in BC.

As a former player at North Shore Cricket Club in North Vancouver
I should like to add my deepest sympathy to the family. I spoke
to a long time member of the club this morning and it is clear
that everyone is very cut up.

While I live some thousands of miles away from Vancouver now
I remember NSCC as a club reflecting the widest cross section
of the cricketing world in its membership.

It is a great tragedy for the family and the club.

A Sri Lankan high school cricketer, Malik Alles, was killed when a ball
hit the back of his head some years back (in the mid to late 80s) while
practising at his school ground in Colombo (less than a mile from where I
lived then) He was a very promising batsman who had the potential of
making it big at the international level. He played in the same school
team (for DS Senanayake College) with current test players, Aravinda
deSilva and Hashan Tillekeratne.

It was a very tragic story indeed. My brother knew Malik's mother, and I
was told his family has still not come to terms with the incredible loss
they suffered in such an unusual fashion.
