query generated as commentators kept going on about having to take 20
wickets all the time, and clearly you can win when not taking 20
wickets but what is the record low, i know some FCM will have
benefited from innings forfeited and mad declarations and the answer
may be as low as 5, but tests would be a bit more sensible and only
had a 2 declarations so maybe 14 or 15 could be the mark there
cheers andrew
I'm not sure of the answer to your query, but in terms of Tests, here
are a couple that are likely close to the top of the list:
T5, Eng vs RSA, in RSA 1999-00: England won after taking only 8 RSA
wickets.
Scores: RSA 248-8d & Forfeit, Eng Forfeit & 251-8
T4, Eng vs WI, in the WI 1967-68: England won after taking only 9 WI
wickets.
Scores: WI 526-7d & 92-2d, Eng 404 & 215-3
The story goes that after this Test, West Indies captain Gary Sobers
flew back home to Barbados for a few days of rest before the 5th Test
of the series. A customs officer asked him as he entered the country
"Anything to declare, sir?" Sobers replied "Never again."
Here's one with taking 10 wickets courtesy of the idiots at MCC (at
least presently). England coming out on top in each of these three
weird instances.
Here's a list for each country of wins when fewer than 20 opposition wickets were taken.
0-X are the two forfeited innings at Centurion
n-C indicates a Completed innings when less than 10 wks fell because batsmen were absent
n-D indicates a declared innings

Thanks, but I'd need an Enigma machine to work that out.
The word wrap doesn't help.
T# - test match number as used by CricInfo
H - home team
A - away team
T - test number within series
Venue
Dates
Marg - victory margin - W (wkts), R (runs), I (inns)
Order - order that teams batted (- indicates follow on)
W-1, W-2, etc - number of wickets to fall in each match inns
Wkts - number of wickets taken by winning team
>> 0-X are the two forfeited innings at Centurion
>> n-C indicates a Completed innings when less than 10 wks fell because batsmen were
>> absent
>> n-D indicates a declared innings
Simples.
Just to nitpick, this one should be 19 (the winners, New Zealand, were
the ones who lost 15).

Jeff
Thanks. I'm sure there must be one or two other errors.

Flicking through a few of my B&H Cricket Years, I found plenty of examples
of winning teams taking fewer than 10 wickets in county cricket. In 1990,
there were some extreme examples:
16-10 June, Derby - Derbys 475-4d & f/f lost to Warks 126-1d & 353-8
http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Scorecards/52/52939.html
4-6 July, Maidstone - Kent 308-4d & f/f lost to Essex f/f & 309-6
http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Scorecards/53/53084.html
4-6 July, Scarborough - Yorks 351-3d & f/f lost to Notts f/f & 354-5
http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Scorecards/53/53089.html
Those were topped by this one from 1991:
23-25 July, Cardiff - Essex 270-2d & f/f lost to Glam f/f & 271-6
http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Scorecards/54/54659.html
But then I found the definitive answer in 1992:
29 May-1 Jun, Northampton - Derbys 180-0d & f/f lost to Northants f/f &
181-2
http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Scorecards/55/55857.html
Only the 11 overs that were possible on day 2 were bowled by Northants'
recognised bowlers, and this surely falls into the category of mad
declarations, as Barnett allowed Northants 50 overs to make 181.
It wouldn't surprise me if there were other examples of winning without
taking a wicket.

That should have read "16-19 June".
