This was in the "Stay In Touch" column in Wednesday's Sydney Morning
Herald: (http://www.smh.com.au/daily/content/970709/columns/columns2.html)
As I haven't seen it discussed anywhere else I thought I'd give it a
mention :-)

GOSSIP

Time bats on: The mess on our desk is such that we have only just caught up
with what must count as one of the finest pieces of marketing timing this
year. Back on July 2, John Fordham, manager of the Australian Cricket
Captain Mark Taylor, announced there would be a new logo on Taylor's bat
during the third test at Old Trafford. "After a long association with
Stuart Surridge bats, Mark will in future use a Puma Millichamp & Hall bat
as part of a new two-year agreement with Puma," Fordham announced. Taylor
promptly went out and scored a massive three runs in his two innings. He
won praise for his captaining skills, but none for his batting. Just proves
you should never announce anything before it's tested. Speak quietly and
carry a big, broad, successful stick.

It is not generally known that many professional batsmen have their bats
hand made for them and the stickers do not necessarily reflect which
company made the bat. I do not know if Taylor is in this group.

However your marketing point is well made. Anyway I doubt anyone blames
the timber, just the flesh hanging onto it.
