For some reason, Indians are not eligible after independence from Britain.

For the very simple reason that he is a citizen of the Republic of India,
amd therefore not a subject of the Queen of the United Kingdom and Great
Britain, and other dominions that have a Governor-General or have the
Queen as Head of State, though I'm not sure where Australia fits now :-)
No Indian has been knighted since 1950, and if I'm not mistaken, this
applied to Pakistan even earlier (1948?)

Membership in the Commonwealth is not enough.

He has already been given Sainthood which supercedes Knighthood.

Kapil Dev is in line for Godhood.

That probably means that (Sir) Allan Border will have to be content
with having his portrait hung in the Member's Gallery (Dining Hall?
I can't remmeber) at the MCG. :-)
