I think the time has come to repost this old post from AP
Also think we should add SSriram to this list.

Hi,

Can somebody help me compile a list of players (batsman or bowlers)
from Chennai who have contributed something of importance to Indian
test cricket.

What do we have?

Venkataraghavan [seems an average bowler from stats]
Srikkanth [an okay batsman, good to watch sometimes]
Robin Singh [nothing great, good commitment thoe]
Sivramankrishnan [nothing great after a few matches]
S Ramesh [too early but seems decent]
Raman [Crap]
Chandrashekar [Crap]
Thiru Kumaran [Crap]
T Shekhar [Crap]

Seems too little contribution in the last 50 years. But Chennaites
give
an impression that they produce the best cricketers. Am I missing
somebody?

Thanks

He was a pretty good off-spinner. Of course, Prasanna was a lot
better; but Venkat was definately the 2nd best in the world
at that time.

>Srikkanth [an okay batsman, good to watch sometimes]

Are you kidding? He was the most exiting Indian batsman I've
ever watched, with the possible exception of Sandip Patil.

>Robin Singh [nothing great, good commitment thoe]

Make no mistake - over his career, Robin Singh has been a
great ODI player. He is the kinda player I want on my team.
But he is really not from Chennai though! (-:

>S Ramesh [too early but seems decent]

Decent is right, and - if he develops the right attitude - has
the potential of becoming really good!

Do they? I haven't really heard that a lot. Can't really compare
with Banglore, let alone Mumbai. A comparison with Baroda or
Hydrabad would be more fair.

I believe that Banglore and Chennai should have seperate teams
from their respective state teams; just like Mumbai, Hydrabad,
Baroda, etc. Would be a lot more fair to the local lads.

Not that there was an awful lot of competition. Pat Pocock and Ashley
Mallett, as far as I can see.

Cheers,

Mike
