Tait's action under scrutiny by New Zealand

Jenny Thompson

December 13, 2007

New Zealand have ensured there will be extra focus on Shaun Tait if he plays
on his home ground on Friday after refusing to clear his action. The coach
John Bracewell would not comment on Tait, who stunned New Zealand in the
Twenty20 on Tuesday, after Daniel Vettori said there would be speculation
over the validity of his deliveries because of their extreme pace

Tait's shoulder-strong technique, low delivery position and flexible wrist
are behind the power that has pushed him to 160kph, but when asked whether
he was happy with Tait's action Vettori said: "You ask Braces (John
Bracewell) that one.

"I haven't looked at it in-depthly enough. I think people are going to
speculate on it whenever someone bowls fast, it's always the first thing
people look at. It's up to people that are on a position to comment on it to
comment on it."

Bracewell, the New Zealand coach, has made a regular habit of stirring the
Australians in previous series and was not talking. A team spokesman said it
was a matter for Roshan Mahanama, the ICC match referee.

Mahanama said New Zealand had not approached him. "It has not come up for
discussion at all," he said, "so there is no special comment on that."

Cricket Australia's chief executive, James Sutherland, was not alarmed.
"This is the first time I've heard Shaun's action called into question and
don't regard it as an issue that he needs to worry about," he told AAP.
"I've always subscribed to the theory that you shouldn't make a fast bowler
angrier than he already is."

If Vettori was tight-lipped on Tait, he did admit that New Zealand had
carried over their problem of dealing with pace from South Africa, where
they recently lost both Test and one-day series, but suggested it was merely
a dip in form. "We have had some problems with it, how we played Dale
Steyn," he said. "I can also cite times when we've played pace very well so
we've got to find a balance between the two.

"It's almost the case of now we know how Australia are going to attack us,
although we did before that first game, we've got a clear vision of what
they're going to do. It's up to the guys to counter that."

Vettori said his side was out to prove a point, as well as retain the trophy
which they won with a thumping 3-0 result last time. "We have to show them
that we can play," he said. "There are some guys in the team that feel they
can."

Jacob Oram is one in particular, the batsman taking the attack back to
Australia in the Twenty20, although it was too late to affect the result.
"It's a nice confident boost for the rest of the team," Vettori said. "Now
we've got to make sure we give a guy like him a chance when we're 200 for 3
or 4, where we can come in the last ten overs and make the most of his
hitting ability.

"He's set at seven because we fit the extra batsman, in Mathew Sinclair, in
there. If we're going really well, he can bat as high as three. If we're
going well he could easily go up the order."

Vettori denied the players were losing interest in either one-dayers or the
Chappell-Hadlee Series. "In the team we still enjoy the game and in spots
around the world you still get very good crowds."

I don't know what all this fuss is about Shaun Tait. The last time he
was in NZ he got his arse handed to him on a plate. I am more worried
about Lee and Bracken.

Having said that expect a hostile spell landing Tait a 5fer. :-(

Dont know whether he chucks or not, but will look closly today. What
struck me is the wooliness of the ICC once again

A team spokesman said it was a matter for Roshan Mahanama, the ICC
match referee.

Mahanama said New Zealand had not approached him. "It has not come up
for
discussion at all," he said, "so there is no special comment on
that."

So they dont look at actions till someone complains. He should have
come out and said,
a) we have been watching his action and it is fine
b) We have concerns which we are following up

What he basically said is no comment, ffs

hmmm, a more complete quote, rather changes the context

"It's not come up for discussion at all. There are no official
concerns," he said. "We'll go with an open mind into tomorrow's game.
There is a process in place and if there is a problem [the umpires]
will follow that process."

Do a search and you will see I've already said they chuck except Tait
who I have not seen enough to make a call on. You can add Dale Steyn,
Ruchira Perera, Shabbir Ahmed and Kyle Mills to this list as well.

Good point. To me, Bob Willis had an action that looked OK until he bowled a
bouncer, at which point I reckon square-leg umpires must have been looking
elsewhere.

Great series of images. Thanks for posting them.

He certainly looks a bit dodgy when you watch him live (on TV), but it's
more of a big wobble than a 15 degree straightening of the arm. I suspect
that he does straighten his arm quite a bit, whether deliberate or simply
from a natural flexation that makes it look worse than it is, but he is no
worse than Shoaib Akhtar. Action-wise, Shoaib is OK. Ipso facto, Tait is
OK.

Murali can bend his arm all he wants. Your 45 degree picture, while
riveting, means nothing. It doesn't depict any straightening of his arm,
which is specifically what the revised Law is all about. The Law is quite
clear on that, and it also ignores natural elbow flexation as far as I know.
That pic is still a very dodgy look though, Dave, so I'm not really arguing
with you. Maybe I'm just more forgiving.

Interestingly I am going down to Melbourne to watch Eric Idles stage
production of The Search for the Holy Grail so got the DVD out to show the
kids last night. They enjoyed it but described it as "so random " which I
thought is an apt description without probably understanding the full
nuances of the expression.

There is also a cricket match down their which I will be getting out to.

As I am yet to see Murali *release* the ball with a crooked arm, I think
it a perfectly fair assumption that he *was* thirty degrees (or, indeed,
more, if the photo was taken a frame or two too late) over the limit set
out to protect him.

Spofforth's suggestion rings ominously in my ears.
