Odds favor Bush apologizing for Iraq, right now.
>Whether standing with spiked shoes on the ball is ok?
Certainly is ok. It's when the spiked shoes are on the feet that a
problem might arise.
Nah, what really matters is whose foot that spiked shoe is on:)

according to the poll on guardian.co.uk, it sure is OK. Nasser
Hussain seems to agree as well "We've all been there. We're not whiter
than white. Where you see the ball and think would it be nice to get
nails into that, get it reverse-swinging. But you've just got to leave
it alone because if the opposition see you going like that to the ball
they get very fidgety."
I'm curious to know what Lamby abd Beefy think.

and part of what he said is spot on
"Vaughan also accused the world governing body of double-standards, saying
there would have been a furore if, for example, Pakistan had been involved.
"If Shoaib Akhtar or Mohammad Asif had been pictured using their fingers on
the ball, there would have been uproar," he said."

Interesting comments from both former captains, Vaughan's because he
presided over a team that won the Ashes because it was better at 'preparing'
the ball than its opponents, Atherton's because he complains of 'trial by
television' despite working as a television commentator.
Not that I disagree with what Vaughan wrote - as you say, he was spot on.
Andrew
There were two incidents picked up - Stuart Broad stopping the ball with his
spiked boot and another player trying to remove a loose flap of leather from
the ball.
I have seen both of these done in local cricket with no intention of
cheating. I once did the "Stuart Broad" because I could not bend my back
fast enough to get my hand to the ball. Afterwards I realised it might have
damaged the ball and so resolved in future to use the boot without exposing
the spikes. Some players wear spikes at some times and not at others and it
is also possible that Broad had done this in training wearing non-spiked
footwear and realised too late that here he was in a match situation with
the cameras watching.
Strauss was challenged and gave an explanation that the players were naive -
much the same situation as described above. They did what they did without
thinking of the possible consequences. Like me, they will reflect on these
incidents and hopefully resolve not to repeat them.
Rather sadder was the SA attitude. They were not prepared to accuse the
English team of cheating through the official channels, but were content to
make their accusations of cheating to the media. It is high time this sort
of thing was stopped between all teams at all levels - even at the level I
play there is nothing like an unfounded allegation of cheating for ruining
an afternoon. If you think someone is cheating, you go to the authorities
and get it dealt with. If you do not have the guts or the evidence to do
this, you keep your mouth shut.
It could also be said that with the modern video evidence the match referee
should get more involved in a similar way to players being charged on the
basis of video evidence in other sports. In this case, assuming that the
players concerned had no history and they seemed to be isolated incidents, a
punishment of "suitable advice" or "warned as to their future conduct" would
seem to be appropriate.

Since the match in question was not held under the auspices of the MCC
and was conducted according to the rules as modified by the ICC and
under the ICC's COC why on earth should the MCC be offering any
clarifications?
You are the first person to ask the question that arahim hoped
someone would ask. I presume his answer would be something like this:
