IIRC there was a test in England in the 90s that had a rest day. It
had something to do with Wimbledon being on at the same time.
there was a period in SL recently (within the last 5 years), when
there was no play on full-moon days. I believe one or two matches had
mid-match hiatuses because of this.

I don't know the answer, but it was for a long time customary for Tests in
England which coincided with the final weekend of Wimbledon to have a rest
day on the Sunday to avoid a clash with the men's singles final. The last
time this occurred was the 1996 Trent Bridge match v India.
Also the 1994 so-called Boxing Day Test at Melbourne started on Christmas
Eve then had a rest day on Christmas Day.
ISTR something more recent in Asia to do with a religious festival or an
eclipse or something but can't recall the details.
Andrew
The Ind v WI test Barbados - yes, that one from 1997,
Ind 81 ao chasing 120 - had the second day as a day of rest.
Vijay
> When was the last test match to use a rest day?
The match that just finished in Dunedin?
The last ENG v AUS Test to have a programmed rest day was the 6th Test
1989 at The Oval. The rest day had already been done away with in
Australia as a regular occurrence, although the 3rd Test v West Indies
at Melbourne the previous summer had started on 24 December and rested
on the 25th.

Er, the last ENG v AUS Test to have a programmed rest day was the 2nd Test
in 1994/95 at Melbourne, which started on 24 December and rested on the
25th.
The 3rd Test at Trent Bridge in 1993 also had a rest day on the Sunday owing
to the Wimbledon Men's Singles Final being played that day.

As others have mentioned the ones in England coincided with the Wimbledon
finals, and were requested by the BBC who covered both events. The Tests
in Australia were (I think) over Christmas, and some of the West Indies tests
were played over Easter.
The 94-95 England tour played the 2nd test in Melbourne on 24, 26-30
December. That does demonstrate just how long the Boxing Day test in
Melbourne "tradition" has been around for...
John
Earlier than that, from at least WW2 to the 1960s, the traditional seems
to have been for a Melbourne "New Year" Test, times so that one of the
days of play would be January 1st. However there was a Boxing Day Test
in 1950-1.

From memory, the last test in Australia to have a rest day not
connected with a holiday was in 82-3.
