The competition will follow a similar pattern to past Father Darcy's
Tipping Competitions; select a fantasy team of players conforming to the
selection rules, and your score is based on fantasy points earned by
those players in each of the upcoming Test Matches between Australia and
India.
Post your selections to r.s.c. - only the Google archive of this
newsgruop will be taken as evidence of selections and substitutions.
Selections will close when the first ball is bowled of each match, and
trading/substitution (as permitted by the rules) will be open after the
end of each match.
Here are the selection rules:
1. Your team will consist of five players.
2. There must be at least two players of each country.
3. Each available player has been given a rating between 1 and 3 (any
player not listed is assumed to be a rating of 1). The sum of the
ratings of your five players must not exceed 8, and this rule must be
maintained if and when you change any player.
4. Between matches, you may change a maximum of TWO of your five
players.
5. The ever popular BONUS PLAYER DRAFT. After the 2nd Test, team owners
will be able to select a BONUS 6TH PLAYER, not being one of their team
of five and (here's the really exciting bit) that player may be from ANY
of the SIX TEAMS playing Test matches between Dec 19th and January 6th
(ie, NZL v PAK, RSA v WIN or AUS v IND). Team owners will select in
reverse order of the TC standings and selections are exclusive, that is,
everyone will have a different 6th player.
Fantasy point scoring will be as per the usual formula:
1 point per run scored batting
20 points per wicket
10 points per catch in the field
10 points per stumping or solo runout
5 points per WK catch or runout assist
10 bonus points for dismissing the high scorer
20 points for a top 6 batsman who does not bat in the 1st innings
1 point per over bowled by a frontline bowler who goes wicketless
(I have dispensed with penalties for byes or dropped catches).
Finally, here are the player ratings, with any player not listed being
rated 1.
RATED 3: ML Hayden, AC Gilchrist, SR Tendulkar, RT Ponting, JN
Gillespie, B Lee
RATED 2: JL Langer, DR Martyn, SCG MacGill, GD McGrath, SC Ganguly, R
Dravid, Z Khan

For Tipping Competition scores
http://johndarcy.net/cricketweb/FDBGTTC.htm
Note that when it comes to the selection of 6th Players, no ratings will
be counted and the player you select, who will be yours exclusively,
will be locked-in for the rest of the competition. It may be worth
noting the Test match schedule for the coming weeks:
Dec 4-8 AUS v IND at Brisbane
Dec 12-16 AUS v IND at Adelaide
RSA v WIN at Johannesburg
(6th-player Draft opens when the Adelaide Test TC results are posted)
Dec 19-23 NZL v PAK at Hamilton
Dec 26-30 NZL v PAK at Wellington
AUS v IND at Melbourne
RSA v WIN at Durban
Jan 2-6 AUS v IND at Sydney
RSA v WIN at Cape Town
Only the 1st Test between South Africa and West Indies (Joh'burg) is
irrelevant to this TC. The bonus 6th player may be chosen from any of
AUS, IND, NZL, PAK, RSA or WIN and will score points in the standard way
in the two Tests he will (might) play between Dec 19 and Jan 6.

Which raises a point not covered by the rules. I will allow entrants to
change their minds as much as they like before the Brisbane Test gets
underway, but after that the two-changes-only-between-matches rule will
be firm.
I suggest to add another rule:
- The best performer HAS to be replaced for the next match.
This rule is pretty essential because, if by chance somebody gets an
in-form player in their team, they keep getting unfair advantage throughout
the TC.
My team:

Will everyone have the time to select the 6th Player in time?
Even assuming that the 2nd test finishes in 2 days, you will have only 5

Possibly not, but that assumes that everyone will be interested in New
Zealand or Pakistani players, which is not a given - I would expect GC
Smith to be the number one draft pick.
When the time comes, there will be plenty of prompting from me, and what
I did last time was to put out a selection call for a *bracket* of team
owners; example, the prompt goes up for those team owners ranked 24
through 20 inclusive, #24 would be expected to name one player but #20
would need to name four alternates in case his preferred choice(s) are
already taken.
Example -
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=3E24109A.77F2EA6%40jarcyd.net
If those team owners at the top of the table don't get to make their
choice until after play starts in Hamilton, then that is no major
disaster. Their chosen player would simply be ineligible for any points
earned before the selection was made.
Getting all this, Alvey?

Your team fits the selection rules, so you are right so far. Good luck.
I think we should have a penalty (say 50 points?) everytime someone changes
a player, this will also prevent people from changing their selections very
frequently, and hence make them think harder when they select their teams.
Just a suggestion.
