Man, Kallis is disappointing. I am not sure if he is just selfish or
is just plain dumb.

Examples:

1. Day 4 yesterday vs. OZ. Obvious need for quick runs yet he just
plods along completely oblivious to the game situation. He didn't even
have to really speed up himself if he did not want to so long as he
recognized the importance of taking a single in the first ball or two
of an over to give strike to Gibbs. But he didn't do that either.

I didn't see the match on Day 4 (bloody power outage in my area). From
the cricinfo reports, it sounds like Gibbs' run out was his own fault.
I also have no idea if Kallis had the opportunity to sacrifice his
wicket and keep Gibbs (who was on song) in the game. But the dummy
probably would never have thought of it even if he had the opportunity.

2. First innings in Sydney. He got a century all right but just how
boring can a guy be at the batting crease? I had a neighbour over who
wanted to learn about cricket. Dude was asleep on my couch within 30
minutes. At one time, Kallis had faced 51 balls from Lee and scored 2
runs in those 51 balls. Yawn. Talk about being completely pwned by a
bowler. And this guy is supposed to be RSA's best batsman??? One of
the 2005 ICC players of the year???

3. MCG. Again, completely bogged down in teh first innings. Goes 45
minutes without scoring a run and then gets out to Lee on a
bouncer/yorker 1-2 punch that's not exactly a never before tried trick
by a fast bowler. It was almost as if Kallis never saw the 1-2 punch
coming (albeit the yorker was of such high quality that it may have
beat him anyway).

4. The Mumbai ODI against India in November. Scores 90 odd runs in
about 150 balls and over 3 hours. India was always in with a good
chance to win as long as Kallis was in there plodding along at that
sorry strike rate. Thankfully (for India), he only got out in the 48th
or 49 over if I remember right.

Anyway, that's my rant. Maybe those who follow RSA more closely than I
do can correct me if my views are way off.

He should retire. He has done 'nuff for SA Cricket. A graceful
retirement is apt.

The run-out was *Kallis'* fault NOT Gibbs. It was Gibbs' call being the
non-striker and Gibbs took off...just to see Kallis remain at the
crease too busy to search for where the damn ball went.

Someone recently posted about Ponting being boring to watch. I'm really
not sure after watching Kallis recently...props to his
consistency(70-some average past few years) but he's not the most
exciting player to watch. And that's being kind.

Not as simple as that. It appeared to me that Kallis was searching for the
ball, and that because he didn't know where it had gone, didn't know whose
call it was. And at the same time didn't know Gibbs was running.

So, perhaps Gibbs didn't make it clear to Kallis that he was running. I
reckon that even if Kallis had set off immediately, Hodge's throw would have
beaten him to the non-striker's end. If that's so, the blame would pass to
Gibbs for misjudging whether there was a run in the shot.

Of course the whole situation may not have arisen had Kallis showed a bit
more urgency generally.

From reports over the years it appears he's dumb as a post which is why he
will never be captain.

The story I love is one told by Bob Woolmer. Apparently the South
African team was running along the beach once and Kallis was puffing a
bit. "What altitude are we at? I'm out of breath," he said.

Aditya [ Saw Astle, McMillan and Harris on the plane
from Christchurch. Astle seemed to be taking
his axing ok. Slept through most of the flight.
Dungers, is there a largish South African guy
attached to the Canterbury squad? ] Basrur

There was a bit of a scandal about Kallis 'dumbness' some years back

I think it was Clive Rice that offended the Kallis clan by saying

(And I roughly paraphrase however the meaning comes across)
"'He may not be a candidate for Mensa.... He father worked on the railways"
(His dad actually worked in the insurance industry)

This upset Kallis as dad somewhat

Well this is the man who claimed that sea level was higher in the
northern hemisphere, who asked a waiter in NZ why in a land with so
many sheep there was no bacon for breakfast, and who voted for Matthew
Hayden as SAn player of the year.

How did Kallis get to vote in 96/97?
