Pak cricketer Afridi's terrorist cousin killed in J&K encounter
Sudhi Ranjan Sen
[With inputs from Mubashir Zaidi in Islamabad]
New Delhi, September 11
Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi's first cousin Shaquib was killed in
an encounter with the BSF on Sunday, September 7. The BSF described
Shaquib as a battalion commander of the Harkat-ul-Ansar, the
Lashkar-e-Tayyeba's previous avatar. The encounter took place in Jammu
and Kashmir's Anantnag district.
"Documents recovered from Shaquib and independent intelligence confirm
that he is the cricketer's first cousin," Vijay Raman, BSF chief in
Kashmir, told HT.
According to Raman, Shaquib is originally from Peshawar but had been
operating in the Anantnag area for the last year and a half. Part of
his brief was to help terrorists who had infiltrated into India get
familiar with the local terrain.
At 2.40 p.m. on Sunday, the BSF received information that Shaquib and
another militant were on their way from Nihama to Niru on a
motorcycle. By 3 p.m. the BSF's 151 Battalion had closed in on them,
but the rider of the motorcycle dumped the bike and disappeared into
the jungles. Shaquib, who was riding pillion, was thrown off and
started firing. BSF men returned fire and killed him.
BSF Director General Ajai Raj Sharma told HT that locals had long been
in the know about Shaquib's cricket connection — the militant
had actually advertised the fact. "Shahid Afridi is a hero in
Pakistan, and Shaquib used his relation with him to attract local boys
to sign up as militants," said Sharma.
Shaquib wasn't in the same league as terrorists like Ghazi Baba, but
was nevertheless a popular figure in the area, said Sharma. He was
also all set to marry a local girl.
Meanwhile, in Pakistan, Shahid Afridi told HT he wasn't aware of
anyone in his family being killed in Kashmir. However, he did not rule
out the possibility either. "Pathan families are very large and I have
literally lost track of the many cousins I have," said Afridi.
Just imagine if this bloke had made it to the Indian Dressing
Room/Practice Arena/Team Hotel using his Shahid Afridi Connection, we
could have seen a 1972 Munich Olympic scene.
Who knows, who else has Terrorist Connections and nobody is even aware
of it.
Last but not the least -- "Good Riddance to that F**ker"!
May his soul rest in peace -- NOT!!!!

When did Kaif, Zaheer and Jaffer convert to hinduism?
-Samarth.
ISI cannot cough up the money to lure the guys like Kaif, Zaheer and
Jaffer, they make hell a lot of it. We are 100% sure that these guys
dont go to any Madrassahs to be brain washed by ISI.
That problem might exist with crickters and their families who dont
make enough, and are jealous that others do.
Madrassahs, as most other things, are not all the same, even if all
now
have the same reputation :-) There are thousands of them in India,
most
just offering religious instruction (often free to the poor who may
often
have no other schooling whatsoever) - but there are a few Wahhabi-
sponsored ones worldwide (even in India) that turn out extremists
galore.
And while I do belive its true that Kaif, Zaheer and Jaffer didnt go
to madrassahs, there apparently *is* an India contender who did :-)

Bangalore: Contrary to the usual perception of ‘madrasas’
(Islamic schools)
— the ground zero of fundamentalism — there is one in
Gujarat that is
throwing up cricketers as well.
Irfan Pathan was born in Baroda and brought up in the Mandvi Jama
Masjid.
His father, Mehmood Khan, is a muezzin (the person who calls for
prayers)
of the local mosque and the family runs a small ‘attar’
(perfume) shop
just outside the mosque for a living.
No wonder, when Irfan Pathan speaks, every sentence uttered is laced
with
an InshAllah (God willing) and MashAllah (May God be pleased) —
perhaps
a reflection of his religious background.
But instead of wearing a skullcap and memorising the holy verses, like
many of the young boys who visited the mosque, Pathan preferred to
play
soft ball cricket with his brother in the ‘sehan’
(foreground) of the
mosque. The result? The perturbed ‘namaazis’ took their
complaints to
young Irfan’s father.
“My father never played cricket but that did not force him to
stop us
from playing. Then people complained about us playing in one corner
but
even that didn’t work. So he asked us to go and play in the
mohalla,”
Pathan, currently playing the Salve-Challenger Trophy for India
‘A’,
recalled with a smirk.
Mohalla cricket was soon stopped after an objection from mother Shamim
Bano, who was apprehensive that it would lead the young boys to
‘other
things’. But after realising his son’s passion for the
game, she made
his uncle, Ahmed Miya, a club cricketer himself, take them under his
fold. Soon, the young Pathan was introduced to the world of Baroda
Sports Club where his coaches — Mehndi Sheikh and Bashir Sheikh
—
took him under their wings. There has been no turning back ever since.

Heh. There used to be this madrassa on my way to/from college. Every
evening, as I returned from college, I would see little kids in white
skull-caps and embroidered kurta-pajamas playing cricket.

Oh so the thought does cross the minds of some people!!
Accept it, the sad fact is no one in Pakistan can guarantee the safety of a
visiting 'non-believer' team (unless all the terrorist groups operating in
Pakistan are controlled by the Pak government or whoever governs the Pak
government e.g.ISI, which they claim is not true)..so it is not entirely
unbelievable that a visiting Indian or any other team can be a direct target
...
What was unthinkable before your post was some guys actually thinking that
ISI can use Indian players to kill their teammates in the name of religion.
It was a very heinous thought and very insulting to the Indian team and
India as a nation! I fail to understand the driving force behind ISI and
whoever creates trouble in India.. what is it? What do they get out of it?
Satisfaction that they killed 50 odd people and ruined the lives of their
families with 2 blasts and the guarantee that they will get a spot in heaven
by doing this? un-f * cking-believable.
Sorry for the OT ..but this was one of the sickest thoughts I have ever come
across...
I wanted to let you know that this was not meant as an attack on India
or Indians. I read what JungleeBoy had written, got annoyed and
responded back with the statement below; this seems to have offended
some people and for that I apologize. In the future I will not respond
to such ignorance.

I will go one step further. In these sad times no government in the
world can guarantee the saftey of its own citizen's let alone visiting
teams. Anybody visitng another country or sitting at home can be a
target. Its our curse to bear, for living in these times.
Also, on the one hand you feel that India has been insulted by
somebody's thoughtless comments but then you go on to make unwarranted
and insulting accusations against Pakistan. How can you expect others
to hold your country or team in high esteem when you are so ready to
insult theirs.
Regards,
Aamir Waheed
To think of it, I don't give a damn or even expect people with militant
attitude or inherent hatred towards India do not hold India in high esteem.
I said that as the poster I was referring to is otherwise a very balanced
poster and I was frankly SHOCKED to see such a post from him.
And btw, do let me know which part of my mail you found insulting to
Pakistan(choose another newsgroup). Yes, I insulted the terrorist groups and
terrorist activities operating out of Pakistan.
But they do not represent Pakistan, do they? (even Pak Government has
acknowledgd the presence of fundamentalists creating trouble in and for
Pakistan) It was not my intention to insult any peace loving Pakistani.
Anyway, my last mail on RSC about this.
Shariq, read your mail. No hard feelings. Just some food for thought for
you: If you feel like justifying your outburst because of someone's
comments, the Godhra rioters can justify their act as they saw their
relatives, friends, men women and children getting burnt alive in the train.
This is extreme extrapolation but similar in principle, and it will never
stop.
No easy solution to this mess!
Definitely no easy solution
The Gujrat episode like several other sickening events in our
countries' respective histories is something we should never ever
forget so that something like this never happens ever again
As for my response, it was not something that I concocted. This was
the justification/explanation/statement the woman who was involved in
heinous Mumbai blasts gave to the Police authorities
JB suggested that some other Pakistani cricketers or cricket board
members could be involved with fundamentalist elements which is
certainly possible but then again there are many other things that are
as well. In hindsight I should have never stooped to JB's level about
all the possiblities because it hurt the sentiments of some who read
it
Shariq
Well said and the sentiment is fully reciprocated.

What I found insulting was IMO your inference that if any visiting
team is safe in Pakistan it is because the terrorists are represented
by Pakistan. Sorry for not choosing another newsgroup. I dont know if
you have been to soc.culture.pakistan or soc.culture.indian recently,
not places I would prefer to post to. Feel free to send me an e-mail
if you want to continue this ...

Yup!
In 2007, when we next play Pakistan, Jaffer or Kaif will score a ton
with help of ISI marked bat, Zaheer will take five wickets bolstered
by all the curd rice he consumed in barbados climate cooked in ISI
marked Prestige pressure cooker.
(helped with some spices put together on advice of shane warne, our
trainer)
Pak bowlers would be trying out spices they used in windies back in
1993. They would need to After Sachin goes through another first over
against whoever would be the current Pakistani Akhtar Jr.
Yes, Kaif, Zaheer and maybe Jaffer will take revenge for Godhra.
