I thought these 2 could have been the
the teams in the final, as the
rest look fairly ordinary.

I assume its still possible whatever
the result?

However in this match the SA attack
looks very 2nd string without Stein or
Philander. Did Morkel get injured:
that would be a blow.

I wouldn't agree. The overall standard looks pretty high to me. I could
easily see West Indies or Pakistan winning the trophy, and I wouldn't
rule out the other four sides.

Yes, although the losers would have to win their remaining two group
matches (assuming that no matches are rained off). Even then it would be
possible for three sides in the group to finish with two wins each, when
the side with the worst net run rate would I assume be the one to go
out.

Yes, he has a thigh strain. If South Africa have to continue without
both him and Steyn (to add to Smith and Kallis) then they'll obviously
be hugely handicapped. (Their decision not to include Philander looks
perverse to me.)

Anyway, it was a fine match today in perfect weather, so the tournament
is off to an excellent start. Congratulations to India.

Well Ok. But i was thinking that England have
struggled at bit in recent ODI, and some of the
other big teams are weakened by absences of major
players.

However this may make the sides fairly
evenly matched and may produce some
exciting close matches like the one
today. Bit surprising that the oval
didnt produce a run feast. the wicket
must have really favoured the bowlers
if Gayle made 39 in nearly one and a half
hours.

Still think India look the strongest side,
so long as the fine weather lasts.

I think there are always likely to be a few players absent through
injury.

It had a bit of bounce, and most of the bowling and fielding was good,
but some of the batting wasn't so good.

WI were only chasing down 171 so he knew he didn't need to hurry.

I think I'd make them favourites.

I wish. We're one batter short and I hope it doesn't show. Dhawan
batted out of his skin but he's only played 8 ODIs, so a bit of
perspective is warranted. A top 5 consisting of Raina, Karthik,
Dhawan, Rohit and Kohli, with Dhoni at 6, doesn't inspire confidence
confidence since this tourney is in Eng, not the sub-continent. And
how our attack can be taken to the cleaners even with 330 on the board
was quite plain to see.

I hope to hell that Ind wins the CT but won't label them the favorites
just yet. I'm always more wary of those teams that begin tourneys
slowly. Pak, RSA, Eng, India and WI should all be in with a decent
shot, with NZ and Aus as the outside bets.

I think the three most likely looking sides are England, NZ and India.
Oz might go further than expected. Pakistan have got a pretty good
attack but look to be a bit light in the batting department.

Starting slowly in such a short tournament doesn't do much good.

I don't fancy SA's chances against Pakistan. SA are short too many
players, and I'm not convinced that de Villiers is the man for the
job.

PAK batters dont seem up to it on these pitches.
OZ seem to have a very imbalanced side, with all
these lefties and no proper spinner. Plus they
are not playing their best bowlers Pattinson and
Siddle who just made 100 against scotland.
I assume they dont want to risk them with the
ashes coming up.

NZ are rubbish at Tests but much better in
ODIs so they could be the dark horse.

England lack explosive batters at the top
to take advantage of the fielding restrictions
early on, but maybe if the pitches stay slow
that wont matter. Also the approach of the
batting powerplay seems to herald a clatter of
wickets.

India still look the strongest side to me,
especially as these white balls dont seem to
swing much, which usually is their problem
in England. Plus they have plenty of spinners
and if the pitches are slow, this could
be a telling factor.
