Both, it looks like -- at least the bowlers are having fun this
morning!

(I must admit I'm a bit surprised to see Cook still there at
lunch...)

Indeed, but I don't know if it really counts as "struggling": he's
made some OK contributions, but everyone -- including him -- expects
quick-scored big totals.

Just to point out that if [fairly normally] a batsman has a
"particular contribution" one innings in three on average, then there
is about a 1/5 chance that his last four innings were unparticular.
IOW, it's thus far nothing to worry about. If his next four innings
are also only OK or worse, *then* we can start worrying. Slightly.

Even if it's not so much the runs as the manner of getting out,
that too is not much to worry about -- batsmen usually get away with
the odd duff shot, so when they don't it's just bad luck. It's when
batsmen survive long enough for it to be clear that they are playing
nothing but duff shots that we have to worry!

well peterson did make 81 in the 1st test. not good for him but enough
for mere mortals. however england will need something fantastic from
him and the rest of the lesser beings, to stop SA for winning this
test. rain anywhere?

I tend to agree, but SA needs to bowl England out -- and on today's
evidence it's not an obvious wicket for doing that, regardless of how
many sessions you have to do it in.
