[Warning - loooong!]

I finally managed to spend (understatement alert!) _some_ time and
updated my "Gavaskar File". It is now a huge collection of statistics,
records and trivia about the career of the greatest Indian batsman in
history. It _is_ available on CricInfo at the URL:

http://www.cricket.org/link_to_database/PLAYERS/IND/G/GAVASKAR_SM_06001378/

but I thought I'd post it here as well. I'm sure there must be some
errors and glitches and inconsistencies in it, so I'd appreciate your
pointing those out if you find any. And this is still work-in-progress,
by the way - more stats and trivia still to come... Anyway, without further
ado, here is...

Absolutely fantastic, I should say! The one surprising fact (am not
denying it, just raising an eyebrow) is SMG's strike rate in ODIs!!

64.02 is more than respectable; as you pointed out in another thread, it is
very, very good considering that the game was not as tilted in favour of
the batsmen as it is today!

Keep it up, and do you have such files for other cricketers, too?

Cheers,
Ragamuffin.

Thanks for the effort Neeran. I saved it as soon as I saw it. If only we
had somebody do this for Azhar (Rohan/Bharat/Ritesh are you listening in
?) GRV ( may be I'll try - if I ever get around to finishing my Ph.D.),
DBV (Sadiq Yusuf, this is yours) and Mohinder (any takers?). Then we'd
pretty much have the low down on every batsman who'se been talked about in
the small world of Indian cricket.
Even if that doesn't happen - great effort Neeran - Thanks.

Congratulations to Neeran for his work on The Gavaskar File ... a veritable
tour de force!
I found it particularly interesting as Sunil played during that period of
my life which was a virtual cricket blackout, and I only got snatches of
reports about this fabulous run machine from India. I have downloaded it
to study at my leisure, but one can tell from just a cursory glance that
that it was a labour of love and one well done!
Cheers!

Sorry I don't have the numbers for Viv Richards, but IIRC it was in
the 90+ range. My "source" is simply old copies of ODI stats from
CricInfo, which at that time included strike rates. The current,
auto-generated stats on CI don't (possibly because we don't have the
'balls faced' info for all ODIs?).

Sometime during the 1992-3 timeframe, sportstar carried out a stat
box that gave some top 100 strike-rate at that time. I remember that
since I had painstakingly typed it and sent it to cricinfo and posted
on RSC :)

I remember Kapil's strike rate was very close to 100 or 100 itself.
Viv was in the 90s or something... Let me see if I have still have that
file somewhere :)

Sorry for the follow-up. Found that file from my archives...
It was somewhere in 1993 timeframe.
See attached...

Here are the OD stats of the leading OD players in the world. The source
is Sportstar (latest issue with Dessi on Cover - forgot the date :o(.
The stats are enormous and I have left out a few coloumns (In Batting -
choosing innings and leaving out matches. In Bowling I have left out
maidens and best bowling perfromances...). Sorry about it, but I dont
have a luxury of a scanner and I have to type it out...

The qualifying mark seems to be 100 wkts and 3000 runs...

I have also sorted the list by Economy rate in Bowling and Strike rate
in batting...no ulterior motives, really !!! :o)

The errors/typos should be mine...

You could also add how many man-of-the-match awards a player won.
As this would show people how a player won games for their sides.

By the way G Marsh played 117 games for Australia.

Not necessarily. If a player is a member of a strong side then he may not
get so many opportunities to win the MoM award.
