This somewhat rare feat seems to have gone unnoticed. This is the
second time Gooch has scored a century and a multiple century in
the same match. Zaheer Abbas leads the way with 4 such ahievements;
all not-outs!

Here is the list of batsmen who have scored a century and a double
century in the same first-class match:

216* & 156* Zaheer Abbas Gloucs v Surrey, Oval 1976
230* & 104* Gloucs v Kent, Canterbury 1976
205* & 108* Gloucs v Sussex, Cheltenham 1977
215* & 150* Gloucs v Somerset, Bath 1981
333 & 123 G.A.Gooch England v India, Lord's 1990

209 & 146 D.W.Dandall Notts v Middlesex, Nottingham 1979
139 & 217* Rizwan-uz-Zaman PIA v PACO, Lahore 1989-90
214 & !00* L.G.Rowe WI v NZ, Kingston 1971-72

214* & 104 Talat Ali PIA v Punjab, Lahore 1978-79
204 & 142 N.R.Taylor Kent v Surrey, Canterbury 1990
242 & 103 K.D.Walters Australia v WI, Sydney 1968-69

Notes:
1. Gooch's century and triple century in the same match is a unique
feat, so is Fagg's two double centuries in a match. I am not sure
whether they really belong on this list.

2. Rowe was making his Test debut.

3. Bradman's feat was the only one to be performed by someone from
the losing side.

A small addition to the list, Bert Sutcliffe made 240ish and 100 against Essex
during the 1949 NZ tour.

f.c. = First Class, Bradman holds the record at about 2950 runs in 1948 I think.

Ummm, ok, second guess, one of the 1949 NZ tourists
John Reid?
Merv Wallace?
Bert Sutcliffe?

....or was it in 1937 e.g; Stewie Dempster???

It was Bert Sutcliffe(NZ) with 2,627 runs in 1949. The only other player with
more than 2,500 runs in an English season was Victor Trumper(A) with a total
of 2,570 runs in 1902.

The highest batting average in an English season for a tourist (except for
Bradman, of course) is freakish 102.00 by the Australian tail-ender Bill
Johnston in 1953. He scored exactly 102 runs from 17 innings with 16 not outs.
The team actually had orchestrated this scenario by declaring or shielding him
from the bowling after he would score a few runs.

I forgot to mention that you are right about Sutcliffe scoring 243 and 100*
against Essex at Southend in 1949. Thank you for pointing out the omission. At
least someone seems to be paying attention to the drivel I post.

Bert Sutcliffe in 1949. He made about 2670 in all first class games, with a
high score of 243 against Essex, where he also made 100 in the second innings,
which was what i originally posted about :)
