Speculation of fallout with Cricket Australia grows as Steve O'Keefe seeks clarity over India tour snub

By Peter Badel

Shunned spinner Steve O'Keefe has urged Australian selectors not to write him off as a Test prospect as his controversial omission for the Indian tour turns political.

Cricket NSW has contacted Australia selection boss John Inverarity seeking answers over the Blues skipper's latest bodyblow at the national selection table.

Such is the mystery surrounding the decision, newly appointed CA spin mentor Stuart MacGill has also inquired whether O'Keefe has fallen out with heavy hitters in Australian cricket.

O'Keefe is the leading Sheffield Shield spinner this summer, taking 17 wickets at 26.76, but strangely lost out to left-arm rival Xavier Doherty, who has just two Shield scalps at 80.

Watch the second Test between India and Australia in Hyderabad, LIVE, EXCLUSIVE and in HIGH DEFINITION from 2.50pm (EDT) Saturday on Fox Sports 3 - plus check out our Match Centre for live stats, scores and commentary.

The 28-year-old's first-class batting average (30.37) is also superior to Doherty's (13.34).

Speculation has suggested a personality clash has left O'Keefe out of favour with influential CA powerbrokers. But the spinner says he is unaware of any toxic tensions and has sought feedback via NSW talent chief David Freedman to advance his selection cause.

"If I have got someone offside, I'm more than happy to work hard to improve. But as it stands I haven't heard a thing," he said.

"If there is an issue with me, good, bad or indifferent, I'm willing to hear it and cop it on the chin.

"I have the belief that if I got the chance to play Test cricket that I would be able to do well.

"Clearly I have to get more wickets and keep performing. But some feedback along the way would be nice and I'm going through the right channels at the moment to work out how I can develop and improve.

"Dave Freedman is our conduit to the selection panel. Speaking to a third person can sometimes be easier so hopefully Cricket NSW can speak to John Inverarity and pass something on to me.

"To play for Australia you have to be performing consistently and I feel I'm doing that."

Former Test leggie MacGill says he is as bemused as anybody over O'Keefe's Indian snub. He believes the left-arm finger-spinner should be in the frame to play in the second Test starting on Saturday.

"I can't shed any light on it," MacGill said.

"I have asked questions. When he wasn't picked (for India), I wanted to know if there was anything I should know about and nobody can tell me anything.

"I don't know why you would pick Xavier Doherty over Steve O'Keefe.

"For me it was always about wickets and runs, if you have the form you get picked for the next level. Xavier Doherty has taken two wickets, Steve has 17.

"The guy can bowl ... I don't understand why he hasn't got the opportunity he deserves."

O'Keefe, who has played seven Twenty20 games for Australia, is refusing to give up hope of wearing the baggy green.

"With each passing year, I feel I'm improving. I would love the chance to show my wares at Test level," he said.

"To force my way into the team I have to be taking bagfuls of wickets and that's what I'll be attempting to do with every opportunity I get.

"Given the landscape of spinners I certainly am disappointed not to be in India.

"I will never know unless I get a chance, but I back my ability at Shield level and if I was given an opportunity I feel I would be ready to back my strengths."

Damn right! What's the world coming to when playing for NSW does not
guarantee one a place in the test squad?

Played grade cricket in and made his FC debut for NSW. Besides, if I
understna the QCCCCCCCC correctly even if you are born outside of NSW,
the moment you don the blue cap you are instantly and forever tainted
(I didn't say anything about "blue blood").

Are you some kind of simpleton?

It's pretty easy.

There is no bias, but there is a clique. Once you're part of the "good ole boys" you get media support and you get selected; and later you get media gigs.

This isn't shocking, it's human nature.

Becoming part of the clique involves being in the "right" group.

So yes, it makes a difference where you were born, because you've had longer to get noticed as "a good bloke". But it isn't the be-all and end-all, because joining the centre of the clique later will also help you out.

Once again... this isn't shocking. It isn't new. It's straight out human nature to prefer things that you know. Of course, it's more prevelant in the kind of atmosphere that breeds the racism of Cronulla and the cronyism of the Obeids, but I'm not going to try to claim that it wouldn't happen anywhere else the power was available.

That you support the likes of Sutton and O'Neil is only evidence of the fact that you yourself are more likely to support someone who's nice to you... rather than deal with the evidence on the face of it.

Of course, now I've gone and said that, there's not hope. But I guess I'm aiming for the next generation.
