Whatmore to coach England ?

LEEDS, Sunday - The coach who saw Sri Lanka win the World Cup -
Dav Whatmore, is one of five candidates short-listed to succeed
David Lloyd as England's cricket coach.

Whatmore's name will be discussed along with the other four
candidates - Bob Woolmer (former England Test player and South
African coach until the end of the World Cup), John Wright
(former New Zealand opening bat and Kent coach), Jack Birkenshaw
(former England spinner and Leicestershire coach), and Duncan
Fletcher (former Zimbabwe captain and Glamorgan coach) by a
working party set up by the England management advisory committee
tomorrow (Monday).

"I am interested in the position. I haven't been given an
interview yet, but it's fair to say that there are a number of
applicants and, from what I've been told, an appointment will be
made at the end of this month" said Whatmore.

"I've had good success before and I genuinely feel that I could
repeat the exercise when English cricket hasn't been that
successful. There are some wonderful players in this country,"
said Whatmore when asked what he could bring to the England set-
up.

Whatmore is best remembered for coaching Sri Lanka to win the
World Cup in 1996 and he came within a whisker of leading
Lancashire (whom he coaches as present) to a treble last season.
They won the NatWest trophy and the Sunday League, only to be
pipped for the county championship by Leicestershire.
