Ok, guys. Yesterday I'd happen to witness possibly the WORST stoppage
I've ever seen in a boxing match. It was in a match between Olympian
Michael Bennett against a clubfighter named Wes Taylor. As soon as the
opening bell rang, Taylor suprised Bennett by coming out aggressively
and firing punches in bunches to the head and body. But most of the
punches were caught on Bennett's arms, as Bennett eluded most of these
punches by backpeddling and using a high guard. Bennett then started
to lay on the ropes in hopes of suckering in the reckless Taylor. As
soon as Taylor landed a punch to Bennett's head, a punch in which was
partially deflected by Bennett's arm, ref William Johnson then
ridiculously jumped in and waived the fight over at 1:37 in the first
without Bennett being hurt at all! I really think the Bee Scottland
tragedy had an big influence on ref William Johnson decision. If
you're going to keep having critics like sportswriter Wallace Matthews
blaming the refs for all of the boxing ring tragedies, then you're
going to see plenty of early stoppages like this one.

I hear and I certainly hope that thier appeal goes through and this fight is
made a no-contest. It's too early in his career for him to be subjected to
such Bullshit. This could ruin a career very easily.

He shouldnt fight one right after another like that. It proves 1 of 3 things or
all that
1. He was fighting a CAN
2. He gives 2 shits about his career.
or 3. hes greedy

I don't know much about boxing politics, but why should this ruin his career?
If he just starts fighting again and beating quality guys he'll be okay, right?
This couldn't have affected his confidence if he knew it was a BS stoppage. It
seems like in boxing there is too much stigma attached to having something in
your loss column. If people know that it was a bad stoppage, then the loss is
just a historical artifact without much bearing on how good the boxer is.

Correct, from what I hear.

>2. He gives 2 shits about his career.

His earlier fight only lasted about 40 seconds. He was still in shape for that
fight, and he probably didn't sustain any damage from it, so why not fight a
week later?

I feel what you are saying and all that. But an undefeated record still goes a
long way in this beloved sport when it comes to earning power and
marketability. Oscar's loss to Trinidad cost him dearly when it came time
for him to get paid for the Moesly fight.

Also, an undefeated fighted will have an easier time getting ranked with that 0
on his record. Look at Spadafora. If he had a loss on his record, do you
think he would have ever been ranked #2 and get the chance to fight Cardona for
the title?

I was at the fight and it was a horrible stoppage made a referee who looked
like he had never done a fight. Words can not describe how shocking the
stoppage was. That said, Bennett did get rocked earlier in the round, but at
the time of the stop they were engaging and it was stopped without a blow
landing at the moment of the stoppage.

I'm not sure what state it was in but in a 4 roudn fight or even a 6 round
fight they should use the standing 8 count

There is no standing 8 in Washington DC.

I hope this fight remains a TKO loss for Bennett. It sets a horrible
precedent if you can go back and change an official decision like
that, irregardless of what may have actually transpired. Where do you
draw the line, if you choose to change this decision? It would open up
a whole can of worms.

So, what's the moral to the story kids? Don't fuck around on the ropes
after a high profile injury or death in a boxing ring. Ref's are just
looking to pull the trigger on a bout. They don't want to be involved in
the "second life threatening injury" in boxing in a week.

Following an incident similar to Scottland/Mercante, managers should be
telling fighters, "If you get hurt, make sure you throw some punches. It's
up to you to show the referee you're okay. He's going to be looking for a
reason to stop the bout."

Well put the shoe on the other foot. If the "OPPONENT" was stunned but not
really hurt like Bennett was supposed to be. Would anyone give 2 craps?

Wes will knock him out again, he's too strong.

Too strong and very limited. And besides, Wes didn't "knock him out"
as you say. He was awarded a TKO victory with the help of a totally
in-experienced referee.
