Boxer Camacho re-sentenced for Gulfport burglary
The Associated Press

BILOXI — One-time boxing champion Hector Luis “Macho” Camacho Sr. has
been re-sentenced to time served for a break-in at a Gulfport computer
shop.

Harrison County Circuit Judge Steve Simpson on Monday also placed
Camacho on a year of house arrest and three years’ probation.

Simpson gave Camacho credit for about five months spent behind bars
while waiting on resolution of charges, including a pending
drug-possession case.

The judge also set trial for Nov. 5 on the drug charge, filed by
Biloxi police. Officers who arrested him on the burglary charge from
December 2004 allegedly found 10 Ecstasy pills in a casino hotel room
he was visiting. Camacho claims the pills weren’t his.

The 45-year-old Camacho remained in custody today at the Harrison
County jail. His attorney, David Morrison, said he wasn’t sure if
Camacho would post $75,000 bail on the drug charge or wait for
resolution in court.

Camacho pleaded guilty to the burglary in May, saying he “just tripped
out” on tequila the night he crawled across the ceiling of shared
office space to retrieve his laptop from ZDI Computer Center. Camacho
offered to pay for the damage, and later did.

The company filed charges after Camacho refused to pay $500,000 to
avoid publicity, according to testimony.

Camacho was accused of stealing seven laptops and about $5,600, but
has “generously compensated” the business, according to Assistant
District Attorney Kirk Clark.

The re-sentencing was necessary because the judge had agreed for
Camacho to serve a year of house arrest in Puerto Rico and later
learned Puerto Rico doesn’t handle such arrangements.

Simpson imposed the maximum penalty of seven years but suspended
prison time. A violation of probation could put him behind bars to
serve the entire sentence, the judge said.

Camacho won super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight
world titles in the 1980s. His last title bout came against
then-welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya in 1997, a loss by
unanimous decision. In July 2004, Camacho dominated Clint McNeil in a
10-round bout at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi.

Yeah, Hector "Macho" Camacho has fallen but this seems to be
either misinformation or total injustice.
