1st of all, Kelvin Seabrooks is not a "some guy". When he finally got wise &
quit fighting guys 2-3 divisions bigger than him, he became IBF bantaweight
champ by 1987 by travelling to Colombia! and knocking out local star (and
cocaine addict) Miguel Maturana in 5. Made 3 HUGELY exciting title defences
in Europe before losing his title in a great scrap to Orlando Canizales by
15th-round stoppage. Canizales won the return in 11 & Seabrooks faded out of
sight....
Then to Calvin. Yep, he won a title too... IBF feather crown by KOing
Antonio "Torito" Rivera in France. i think that was 1987 as well. There was
a round-of-the-year-candidate as Rivera floored Grove in the 4th, Grove
barely beat the count, only to rally & have Rivera down thrice for automatic
TKO in the same round.
Grove defended his title with a points win over late sub Myron Taylor, then
in another great, memorable fight lost his title to then-totally-unknown
Jorge Paez in Tijuana/Mexicali bull ring. The fight had the last-ever 15th
round of a major title fight. Grove seemingly had the fight in the bag
before wilting in Mexican July heat, Paez put him down thrice in 15th &
secured the closest margin in cards by virtue of that 10-7 round.
After losing his title Grove had another go (stopped) vs. Paez, lost a
disputed hairline decision against very passive Azumah Nelson (these for
world titles) & basically fought Who is Who of lighter divisions. Some
mentionable victories came over Troy Dorsey, Regilio Tuur, Jeff Fenech (a
rare Grove KO win) and then-hot-prospect Dennis Cruz. Grove also suffered
several traumatic defeats (even before his "cannon-fodder" stage) against
such underdogs as Bryant Paden & 35-year-old Bernard Taylor who both knocked
somewhat fragile Grove out&cold.

Wow! Thanks for the information. I must say I did not know Kelvin Seabrooks
was a then-future champ when I watched the tape. I was guessing he was just
another journeyman of that era, you know, like he would have been to if
Grove (who was 19-0 then) was a prospect today.
By the way, just watched another old tape now, Anthony Witherspoon (Tim's
brother) vs. Tim Broady. Anyone remember that one? Short fight, but sweet as
hell. I gotta go through old tapes more often.

"Some guy named Kelvin Seabrooks" had a pretty good career, too, holding
the IBF featherweight title from 1987-88, despite having double figure
losses. As for Grove, he held the (IIRC) IBF featherweight title, which he
lost in one of the most memorable fights I ever saw, to Jorge Paez in the
heat of the Tijuana (or was it Mexicali) bull ring on USA. Paez, down by a
whopping margin going into the 15th round, floored Grove 3 times to eke
out the win on the scorecards. To be fair, the heat did Grove in, too.
Grove, who had been a classy boxer with a lot of skill but not a big
punch, wasn't quite the same fighter after that, and IMO he hung on much
too long afterward. I had heard he was getting into training. I hope so,
because he had a lot of skill, and in his prime was great to watch.

happened to fenech after the first nelson fight but he was never the same
after that. If fenech had anything left he would've walked through grove
with ease!

Fenech was used up, but he was also favoured over Grove (I think), who was
ALSO quite used up. There were two big surprises in that fight - that Fenech
got flattened like that, and that Grove was the one who did it.

At the point when he met Grove, Seabrooks was just another journeyman. The
transition he made when he moved from feathers/super-feathers down to
bantams was very remarkable. Remember, he had some 11-12 losses before that
move & burst to to world-class.....
