The USA Boxing team traveling to Poland for a dual meet
crashed in Poland on March 14, 1980.
Yes - we lost some of our top boxers, physicians, coaches and
other personnel. We lost 22 people in that tragedy. A memorial is
held every year in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the U.S.
Championships. They are not forgotten.

Yes, the plane crashed near Warsaw, Poland and amongst near 90 killed
we lost some fine talents such as Lemuel Steeples, Paul Palomino,
Richard Robinson, Lonnie Youngs, David Rodriguez, Jerome Stewart,
Walter Harris, Byron Lindsay and coaches Thomas Johnson and Yrenio
Robles, I'm forgetting some names but that's about it, very sad.

There was a Chuck Robinson - no Richard.

Young.
Kevin Anderson, Elliot Chavis, Gary Clayton, Byron Payton and
George Pimental.

Junior Robles is how he was known.
Also Andrea MCoy, Col. Bernard Callahan, Joseph Bland, John
Radison, Delores and Dr. Ray Wessonn and Steve Smigiel.
Wasn't Palomino the brother of Carlos Palomino?
Matt
Paul Palomino was indeed Carlos' younger brother, he was considered a
good prospect but I believe he was still very inxeperienced with few
amateur bouts.

Oh, yes, Andrea was only 19 years old, I think he won a Silver Medal
in the 1979 Spartacade Games. I believe they named a new high school
athletic field at McCoy's old New Bedford High School in his honour
back in the late 90's
The New Bedford Recreational Boxing Club founded in 1989 is located in
the Andrea McCoy Memorial Gym.
I think I once met Coach Amos Ribeiro who supposedly coaches there.

I think that depends on your interpretation of "few" amateur
bouts. Generally speaking, a boxer does not get selected for a dual
meet unless he is "open" (11 bouts or more) and has placed well at the
U.S. Championships, or other national events. If Paul started as a
young boxer, it is quite feasible that he has 40 or (many) more
amateur bouts by the time he was put on the USA team going to Poland.

Lots of "believes" and "thinks." 8-) What's your involvement
with amateur boxing, Tom?
iirc, hwt tony tucker was also supposed to be on that plane, but didn't make
it because of an injury he had suffered.
