True, but I'm not sure that "Hatton" doesnt mean "swollen face" in Old
Welsh. Bad hands notwithstanding, does Collazo really have more power
than Gatti at 147? If the answer is no, Gatti would be one live dog
against Hatton.

Peace.

Gatti at 147 would be much more than a "live dog", IMO, against Hatton.
Gatti has some good boxing skills. He'd probably get him more than did
Collazo against Hatton. Gatti has more pop in his punch than does Collazo.
Gatti-Hatton would be a highly entertaining bout. I think Buddy McGirt
would come up with a fight plan which would allow Gatti to beat, possibly
stopping, Hatton.

My guess is, this bout would produce the cry from the fans for a rematch.
OTOH, if Gatti were simply blast Hatton out of there, Hatton might decide to
start being a bit more responsible regarding his diet.

If this fight were made I'd almost agree with you and take Gatti in an
"upset." I just can't get the other possibility out of my head, that
Gatti once again "forgets" his boxing ability, breaks his right hand,
and gets murdered in a colossal ass whupping... in close, Hatton has
the strength to manhandle Arturo.

Well, that sure would be a nice matchup. I'd expect Hatton to come out on
top after a hard struggle, strictly because of work rate. But yeah, I could
see Gatti winning it, too. Let's get it on!

I have been thinking the same thing for some time now. People underate
Gatti's boxing skills. He is no match for Mayweather or Collazo in terms of
boxing, but he is good enough to cause Hatton problems with boxing alone,
not to mention his power.

Gatti is 34 years old and fighting Baldomir in July. Hatton is 7
years younger. While Gatti is a better boxer than Hatton, I'm not so
sure he has enough pop left in his punch and I'm not confident that
his hands could withstand pounding on Hatton all night. This fight,
if it is ever made, could be very dangerous to Gatti's health. I'm
not so sure I'd want to see that happen.

Yeah, win or lose he would take yet another awful beating. Hatton's
body punching is wicked, I definitely saw him stand Collazo straight
up once or twice.

Hatton has heart, if he didn't he wouldn't be where he is today. I
think that HBO piece showed that he has heart both inside and beyond
the ring.

Gatti doesn't just have heart, he has too damn much heart for his own
good. I could see him getting a SD over Hatton and spending the next
half week celebrating in an ICU. Hatton is better than Ward ever was.
Gatti is three years older. This fight is winnable but extremely
dangerous for Thunder.

every time i say i'll never count Gatti out of any fight he gets
totally outclassed, and evertime i think he's done he knocks another
champ out......when gatti vs PBF and Hatton vs Koysta was made i
thought it was all backwards ,and that Gatti and Hatton should fight
first because there probably won't be much of either of them left after
the other fights.....well, even if i'd like to say that was half-right
(gatti got totally embarrassed by mayweather) it really isn't, as he
came right back blood and guts and Gatti in his next fight and surprise
surprise, Hatton not only beat Koysta, he completely manhandled him
(how quickly we forget). Anyway, i think this would still be a good
fight, and i like both these guys in this fight......maybe hatton a bit
more .

Saying that Hatton doesn't have as much heart as Gatti is not the same
thing as saying that Hatton does not have heart. Hatton has a very good
will. Note his recovery, and even comeback by the end of the round, in
the 12th against collazo. You really don't end up as a pressure
fighter, or execute the game plan that Hatton did against Tszyu, without
having a solid heart.

It's just that Gatti has more heart than Rudy and Rocky combined, and
has demonstrated it on many opportunities. How many people have you
seen get up from a Mickey Ward boddy shot? I've seen two: Gatti and
Emanuel Augustus. That's a feat of will. And before Ward, there was
Ivan Robinson, and Joe Hutchinson, and, well, most of Gatti's fights.
Ward wasn't a pound for pound guy, but when he hit the sweet spot on
your liver, you tended to stay down.

I don't think it's possible to have more heart than Gatti. I think he'd
stand in the street and fight a garbage truck, and still be swinging
when it put him in the landfill. Hatton may have as much heart, he just
hasn't had to show it yet.

In any case, I'd take Hatton in a matchup. For me the issues are
handspeed, stamina, and strategy. Hatton has an edge in handspeed.
Gatti will fight through anything he can, but we often see him fight
through being gassed. Hatton has shown good stamina. As far as
strategy, Gatti will show flashes of boxing, but it's fairly easy to
take him out of that. Mickey Ward was kind of a plodding fighter, and
he was able to draw Gatti out of boxing completely in the first fight,
and at times in the other two fights. Hatton is good at cutting off the
ring, and would get Gatti slugging pretty quickly. The wildcard is that
Hatton's chin at 147 has to remain suspect. Kostya Tszyu is the hardest
puncher on Hattons' resume, but Tszyu didn't land his clean right in
that fight (which is to Hatton's credit). Hatton never tasted the full
power of Tszyu. Collazo is not a hard hitter, but Ricky was stunned.
Gatti certainly hits harder than Collazo. He's not as crafty about
landing the punches, but Hatton can be hit.

I'm not entirely sure who would lose that fight, but I know who would
win-- me, and everyone else who saw it.

This is all about what you have seen in Gatti.

There is nothing about what Hatton may or may not have : event hough he
has a proven chin and heart.

Therefore you cant state categorically that Gatti has more heart. Gatti
is a beaten fighter : Hatton isn't. Another way of looking at who has
the most heart.

Yeah, I guess that's why all these prospects clear out the midwest
circuit, to show how much "heart" they have. Being undefeated
indicates your level of competition, not your will power. Shit, I
think Emmanuel Augustus has at least as much "heart" as Hatton. Go
look him up on boxrec.

No way does Hatton have more handspeed than Gatti. He has heavier
hands, especially to the body. But the athletic ability edge goes to
Gatti easily.

Which is exactly why I would pick Hatton also. By six, seven, and
eight, he will be wailing away at Gatti's body, Gatti will start
slugging, probably break his hand, and start to take one of his
trademark classic beatings. But somewhere in one of those exchanges,
he'll catch Ricky with something... and then the fun will start.

What is this obsession with diet and weight increase between fights?
Hatton never has any trouble making the weight and arguably even if he
did, it would probably make him meaner according to Barry McGuigan.

You guys are getting it twisted, Scar said IHO, Gatti has more heart. Didnt

heart but Gatti is the standard you DONT want to be measured against. I
wanted to see the guy retired a long time ago. Gatti has as much heart as
anyone you will ever see and sacrifices his health for sheer glory, because
you know the man has money. Although it was a big payday, he knew he didnt

Well lemme ask this question....Mayorga's hype was mostly built off of
Vernon Forrest, right? Could we be putting too much emphasis on Hatton's
victory?

Now, Mayorga held his own with Forrest again, KOed Six Heads...who's only
other loss (besides the fight where he crapped on himself) was to Margarito.
Fought close with Spinks.

What else has Ricky done? Ok, Stewart, Vilches, Tackie, Phillips wins dont
look all that great when you take into account that Sharmba Mitchell
dominated everyone of those guys before Hatton even got to them. I mean
Mitchell had abosolutely no problems with them at all. Olievera and
Pendleton were not even worth mentioning at that stage of their careers.

I am just asking, do you think it is possible that we may be basing too much
on that fight with Tszyu?

I don't think so. Hatton has his eye on Tszyu for a long time as his
biggest test and significantly changed his style and tactics to suit
Tszyu: keep out of the way of Tszyu's right (he only got hit once),
stay well inside and wear down the older man with superior stamina.
That to me suggests an intelligent and focussed fighter. True, if you
haven't watched him much, the difference may have been impeceptible.

Please understand, my question is not whether Ricky had a great fight with
Tszyu as Mayorga was the one to dethrone Forrest. They both deserve full
credit for their wins. My question is, if that is his only claim to fame,
is it too much emphasis on the Tszyu fight and is that what his whole aura
is being built on? Kind of like I think Tarver is overated based on the
Jones fights, I have to see guys like Tarver and Hatton perform on a more
consistent basis against high level opposition.

hmm, well i think it's the way he did it that was impressive and seemed
to me to say that this guy had something special apart from sheer
talent and technical competency..,boxing is a funny sport, and often
hard to accurately disect.Look at Tszyu....a lot of people were picking
him to loose to Sharmba Mitchell in the rematch as Mitchell had been
very sharp and Koysta was both coming off of an injury and a loooong
layoff for an older lighter weight fighter and he had ballooned up even
more than hatton .Yet he comes out and completely destroys
Shambra.....now nobody gives Hatton a chance against THIS guy......only
he's still just one short, one-sided fight removed from a huge layoff
and an advanced age for a lighter weight guy. Now he gets really
roughed up by Hatton.......and now what do we make of Hatton? Well, i
still like the way he goes about his business in the ring.....he's
still to me got that something that makes him the same kind of
dangerous fighter I thought he was before and after K.Tszyu . But i
really don't think his style is conducive to a long up and down type
career a la Gatti...and once his will is truly broken, I think he'll be
easy pickings for the next guy.

Sorry for the delay in response. Actually, I did talk about Hatton. I
note Hatton's attributes in the very first paragraph, and in the third I
say that he may well prove to have the heart of Gatti, we just haven't
seen it yet. If Gatti were a more skilled fighter, we wouldn't have
seen quite so much of that heart.

Scar said that it was his opinion that Gatti has more heart. I admit
that there is the possibility that Hatton is in that league. But we
haven't seen that yet, because Hatton hasn't been put in the position to
demonstrate it. I note that Gatti-level heart is rare, so it's not a
way off base assumption that any given guy, even one that has
demonstrated a decent will like Hatton, does not have that terminator
level of will.

Southpaw made a good point about how many c-level fighters can build up
a gaudy record until they get tested the first time. You don't have to
have heart if you're so much better than your opponents. In fact, I'd
say how you lose, and how you come back from a loss can help define a
man's heart. I think of Chico Corrales getting up 7 times against
Mayweather and still complaining about the stoppage, or begging for one
more round with a spurting hole in his lip, then coming right back to
beat him, or Shane Mosley somehow surviving the first Forrest fight and
wanting an immedate rematch. Even fighters that have shown decent will
in their careers, like Hamed did against Kelley, have their heart
questioned if they respond to a loss poorly. We remember Hamed for
wilting in the Barrera fight as he was getting beaten, then putting in a
halfhearted effort against Malvo and walking away.

If Hatton fights Margarito, we may find out if he has otherworldly
Gatti-level will. I imagine that Hatton's people would rather he just
win easily.
