Mob heavy slain
Boxer Eddie Melo had violent past
By ROB LAMBERTI, JOHN SCHMIED and JONATHAN KINGSTONE -- Toronto Sun
MISSISSAUGA -- Former boxing champ and underworld enforcer Eddie Melo was
gunned down execution-style outside a small Italian social club last night.
Melo and a second man were shot to death around 6:25 p.m. in the parking
lot of Cliffway Plaza, near Cawthra and North Service Rds.
The two men were sitting in or standing beside a Jeep Cherokee when they
were shot by a lone gunman.
One man's body was found in the SUV while the second victim lay on the
ground.
Moments later the killer carjacked a red Honda sedan in the plaza parking
lot and sped away from the scene. The driver of the car wasn't injured.
ALERT ISSUED
Alerts were issued last night for a red Honda with the license plate
AHWS241.
"With this guy there would be a multitude of suspects and a multitude of
motives," a source said.
Sources told The Toronto Sun that Melo's godfather was Frank Cotroni, a
major Mafia chieftain now in prison.
Although Melo had recently been laying low, he was well known to police as
a mob enforcer and an extortionist.
"He was muscle but not a freelancer. He would look after Cotroni's
problems," said a police source.
He was the target of a failed hit by another crime family in 1989.
"Eddie is the kind of guy you want to make sure is down," a source said.
"He has a long memory and is a tough son of a bitch."
Since he became known to police about 15 years ago, Melo spent much of his
time fighting deportation. Canada tried to send him back to Portugal, which
he left as a child.
The source said most within the Toronto area underworld knew Melo and he
was also tight with the West Coast Hells Angels.
Melo was close friends with Lloyd George "Uncle Louie" Robinson -- the
former president of the East-end Hells Angels chapter in B.C.
About five years ago Melo was acting as an enforcer for Robinson who used
to have a stripper talent agency. They would cruise the main streets of
Toronto trying to entice girls to join the agency, sources said.
Melo had a "entrepreneurial spirit" and would make a buck any way he could
"but nobody would find anything under his fingernails," the source said.
A police source said the carjacking "doesn't make the hit look professional
it was very sloppy."
The source said it appeared the shooters were angry at one of the two
victims -- but the other was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The shooting took place outside the Amici social club.
'REALLY DIDN'T BELONG'
"He really didn't belong here. It's not that type of a club," said a man
who frequents the club and knows the owner.
But two other men who frequent the bar said there had recently been a
change of atmosphere.
Men of Portuguese background had started frequenting the club -- formerly a
mainly Italian hangout -- in the last week or two, the men said.
After the shootings police taped off the parking lot to hold back the
stream of curious onlookers.
A forensics canopy was placed over the crime scene to protect it from the
weather. The coronor's wagon removed the bodies from the scene about 11:30
p.m.
Shopkeepers from around the plaza were taken in for police questioning.
A clerk at the nearby Cliff Rd. Convenience Plus, who asked not to be
named, told The Sun he hadn't seen anything but had heard three shots.
Afterwards a man ran into the store saying his car had been stolen, the
clerk said.
