I hate Sam's Club.

I used to go there to buy things for our store, because the prices were
good.

Each and every time, I'd end up getting into an argument with the drone
at the door who insisted on looking at, and defacing, my receipt. I refuse
to be a prisoner of the store, and they most certainly may NOT write on my
receipt--would the manager let me sit in her office and scribble on her
paperwork?

It got to the point where just thinking about going there made my blood
boil, so I had quit shopping at Sam's entirely.

Today, I went in to cancel my "membership" and get my $35 back.

The manager is required to process this, and she of course wanted to
know why I was unhappy. So I told her. She then had the gall, or
stupidity, to try and tell me that they only checked my receipt to make sure
that I was not overcharged.

I don't think she liked it when I told her not to lie to me. Then when
I asked her if she had no shame at all for spouting such insulting drivel,
she got reallllllll quiet, and just gave me back my cash.

I feel better now. Why do people let stores like Sam's and Costco walk
all over them? Life is rosier knowing that I will never have that same
stupid argument again. Somehow, Nordstrom and Neiman-Marcus manage to
survive without treating their customers like theives.

Actually, the reason for this is not that they don't trust their customers
it is that they don't trust their own employees. They don't want your buddy
to charge you something far less expensive while you walk out with the primo
item.

I'll shop elsewhere, where I'm treated decently. Hell, even
WalMart, which owns Sam's, doesn't give me the same hassle when I'm leaving
the store.

Of course. But they won't admit it, and why should I be

You are a member of "the public" and people in retail learn to read the
public really quickly.

The manager started reading you as a nut when you gave the insane
reason why you are quiting your membership. When you got all riled up,
she just said to herself, "Another fucking kook. Tenth one today", gave
you the money, watched your fat ass go out the door and hasn't given
you another thought.

Because *you* are a fucking kook.

When I lived in Conn. and had to deal with such stores, I simply
ignored the drone and walked on out. This may have left the drone
fussing in my wake, but I ignored that. Nothing further ever
happened.

When you cash a check, do you take offense when they ask for your ID?

I love Costco. The other night the door clerk found that the cashier had
failed to charge me for my 'bale' of toilet paper. Costco would love to
eliminate the cost of paying someone (or a couple of people) to stand at the
door and check receipts. Evidently, they find it cost effective. It keeps
'shrinkage' (theft) down, which in turn keeps my costs, as a customer, down.
I have never felt any afront from someone looking at my receipt.

FWIW, it is my understanding that the net income from Costco (we don't have
Walmart or Sam's near me) comes from the membership fees paid by their
customers.

Are you (or would you be) offended when (were) a police officer ask to see
your driver's license? After all, he should trust you.

When I was a grocey clerk and someone told me they were going to quit
shopping there, I'd tell them, "We're really going to miss your pound of
hotdogs a week."

The point is that their 'drone' should watch for people bypassing
the checkout registers, not annoying customers who have completed a
transaction. They can have their security, but I won't let them
annoy me.

They tend to put women on the door--now you just need to imagine a

My wife served on a jury during the trial of a man who robbed a Walmart
cashier at gunpoint. The store camera over the cashier only took video
of the cashier and her drawer, not the robber. The company is more
worried about internal theft. Because it was only the cashier's word
against the defendant, and only the cashier was on camera, he was found
not guilty. This upset the cashier who saw the man shopping and he used
her lane several times a week prior to the armed robbery.

Lucky you. When there are 10 people in front of me, all with full
carts, and the drone needs to count each and every item, it can take damn
near as long to get out the door as it did to check out.

Christ, it's a receipt. Most people throw them away. It's not a work of
art. And even after all this, the receipt still serves it's designed use.

My own thoughts are that you are picking your fights poorly.

I wish I had a life where that would be the worst problem I had.

Now, if you were being singled out, while others walked out
unchecked, you might have an issue. But you have chosen to zero in on
defacing your receipt. That sounds terribly petty.

"Chris Pisarra" you signed an agreement to abide by the rules of
Sam's Club. Then you violated those rules by protesting the legitimate
Sam's Club rule. The only reason Sam's gave you a refund because you
were obviously out of control and behaving like a maniac about to go
berserk. You should seek psychiatric care. I wouldn't want to see you
walking the streets while my family was around.

I agree Pinky. It is no problem at all for the door checker to look in my
cart and draw a line through the receipt.

Did any of you know that Sam's prescriptions are the cheapest? And one does
not need to be a member to use the pharmacy. The cheapest is to buty A 90
DAAY SUPPLY. mY CARDIOLOGIST TELLS HIS PATIENTS ALL ABOUT IT, EVEN IF THEY

This is a huge problem in the bar business. You need an experienced
bartender but not one so experienced that you lose money.

There are many very busy clubs that go out of business because most of
the money is going into employees pockets. The owner is often oblivious.
I had a friend that filled in for a bartender that took a couple weeks
off. The owner was amazed that the receipts were twice what they had
been. The difference, of course, was honesty.

I don't know whether this is serious or not... At Costco, when I
leave after making my purchases, I have to wait in line for about six
to fourteen seconds at the exit door, and then someone marks my
receipt with a marker, and then I leave. Not onerous at all, compared
to the amount of time I have to wait at the checkout line. The lines
are long and they never have enough checkers. So it's beyond me why
anyone would complain about someone scribbling on their receipt with a
marker.

Judging from their prices, I'd say the thieves are on the other side

Chris,

Note all of those responders who point out that you agreed to Sam's
rules and if you don't like them, don't be a member. Well, at least
your club didn't violate all of their own rules to run you out. How do
you think you would like that?

Guess what? Prices are "good" because of little details like using a
more cost effective, albeit more intrusive, method of inventory
control. They're called trade-offs. Life is full of them. Deal.

And oh, by the way, ever eaten at the snack bar those stores have
beyond the registers? Very convenient, especially if you have kids
along, and good prices there too. But not too practical if it left
you wide open to someone walking off with your paid-for shopping cart
while you're eating, wouldn't you say?

At Sam's Club the snack bar is outside--beyond the drone.

The store doesn't give a damn whether anyone steals your
cart from there, they got their money already.

the person at the door has to be the most stupid thing ive ever seen.
One friday when I paid and left there were 6 people deep in line
waiting to be checked. I just passed everyone and left. people
started following me. they never look at the receipt. I havent found
many deals their anyhow, i go to a foodservice distributor that has a
cash n carry and better selections.

Here's a stock tip for all of you...go buy some BJ Warehouse club
stock because within a few years Sam's club is going to buy out BJ's.
BJ's has had some money problems and the cheapest way to expand your
market share these days is to purchase the competition. sam's has
huge money reserves and wants to increase their northeast market
share. the easiest way is to buy the competition. when you get rich
don't forget me.

It's attitudes like being unwilling to pay for service that permit the super
stores to drive the small guy out of business.

I go to my local hardware store, who charges a few cents more, but I get
real help. this guy has even let me take several items home, without paying,
provided I agree to bring back the ones that don't fit and pay for the one
that does. (Yes the place has been in business for over 45 years.
Last year while travelling I needed a wrench, but was not sure which size.
the owner let me take two out of the store and then return the one that did
not fit. Yes, you can do that in your local super store, but how long would
you wait on line to return the unneeded item.
I hope to stay away from politics in this forum, but see red when folks say
I can get it cheaper at.<.........>. Eventually when the small guy is
driven out of business how much longer will prices at the super store be
cheap. think gas for your car.

If standing in long lines is your thing, enjoy.
Before my semi-retirement I ordered my business supplies from a business
supply house that delivered. To me photography, golf, quality family time,
fishing and business, (not necessarily in that order,) were more important
than waiting in long lines to save a few bucks. For food and paper products
I go to a local supermarket, Fairway. Then, it's in and out, with minimal
checkout times, top quality and I do not have to purchase gargantuan
quantities.
However, I think it's important to keep the small businesses alive and well.
Does anyone really think that Sam's Club will deliver a small prescription,
or over the counter order, when it's needed and you feel lousy.

Oh man, there's a lot to be said for real service, particularly in a
hardware store. It's also nice to get the stuff you need rather than
what the big box store makes the most profit on. And they tend to sell
better products. Buy paint at Home Despot and you'll get a choice of
what most painters believe to be the two worst brands.

There's not a lot of real hardware stores left, but if you are so
lucky as to have one, patronize it.

They don't trust anyone. Those anti-theft device detectors flanking
the doors aren't a fixture in virtually every major retailer because
they believe in the basic goodness of mankind. They've learned they
exist in a society of thieving lowlifes. Except they can't say that so
they make up bullshit excuses.

It also doesn't matter if your store is in the middle of a black or
hispanic crackhouse slum and you've got hours and hours of video of
blacks walking out the door with stolen TV's and waving at the camera
mouthing "F*** You Whitey", if you give them half a reason they'll
find some greaseball attorney to sue you for discrimination if you let
on that you think that just maybe one particular segment of the
population is more prone to criminality than others.

So they make up bullshit excuses.

Outside? Not at any Sam's I've ever been to. In fact I can't really
picture such a snack bar -- besides the theft hazard, shutting down
every time the weather becomes less than perfect -- possibly doing
enough business to be worthwhile to the store.

When the potential theft would occur on store property, so that you
would associate the theft with shopping there? Yeah, call me crazy,
but I think that just might be more of a concern than customers who
freak out over receipts not remaining in pristine black-and-white
condition.

I've never been to Sam's Club here, but Costco's snack bar is outside
at the outlet where we go. It's an area with a roof, but open air and
picnic tables.

For me, the Big Box stores such as Costco, Sam's Club, Lowes, Home
Depot, and the many others that have since closed own over the years,
are fun places to visit and take a tour of what the store is selling.
At the end of my "touring" up and down the aisles, I go home and tend
to the chores in caring for our home. And the food at home is a far
better fare than the crap sold outside any Big Box store.

If you were a store owner, how would you prevent a customer walking
out the store with a $2000 TV and going back into the store again and
use the same receipt again to walk out with another identical $2000
TV?

The issue is, the Sam's Club employees should be able to judge who is and
who is not honest. Chris looks like an honest guy in his Nordstom and
Neiman Marcus slacks. They should hire people who can work the exits and be
be better judges of character.

OTOH, I can understand why I get stopped and have my receipts checked.

++++I always ignore alarms that go off when I leave a store (because I

After the futile search I asked him why he had accosted me, walking

Refusing to comply probably would. Not that it matters much in this

++++Well, it read to me that he got into an argument, it didn't sound
as though he was frothing at the mouth. Kingsley Amis maintained, by
the way, that berserk should be pronounced BER-zerk, but nobody said
it like that because it made you sound, well, berserk if you did.

++++I wouldn't want to see him walking the streets, either, and I hope

Which is exactly what shop lifter does. Especially the decoy on the
team.

>(because I
>don't shoplift, I'm reasonably confident that it's nothing to do with

However the staff don't know that.

Also you have no idea if it is to do with you or not. Quite often the
tags are not neutralised when you buy things. This will be YOUR problem
if you go into another shop and set their alarms off.

ALL shoplifters blag that they are innocent and it is nothing to do with
them. Especially decoys who tie up staff whilst others get away.

>It doesn't happen that often, obvioulsy, but on one notable

Quite correct too.

difficult for everyone else. .

>After the futile search I asked him why he had accosted me, walking

Because that is what good shoplifters do.

No such thing. You are judging by superficial looks. The best con
artists look very respectable.

>and
>with a store bag, rather than the chap who had run out of the store at

He was the other plain cloths store detective going after the other
respectably dressed shoplifter who also had a bag from the shop.

He was the decoy designed to get the security to chase him whilst the
shoplifter with the goods walked away quietly.

You are prejudging the situation again with bias and with information
that is unqualified

> Displaying a rare honesty,

You have no idea if it was rare. You seem to be making an awful lot of
judgements based on bias and no information.

> he said it was because

So he went for the one of the two suspects he could obtain. Sensible
strategy. Sounds like a professional.

Also if the obvious runner was designed to get security to chase him
whilst the real shop lifter walked away he would have been right.

I would probably ban you from the shop on the grounds that with your
attitude and actions you were probably the decoy for the shoplifters.

Having the time & date of the purchase on the receipt? The
cashier's name & register number also, to verify that the person
is actually there today? (I know you can edit/copy receipts, change
the date, etc.)

++++Ah, well. Perhaps you had to be there. Or perhaps I could have
been more explicit about the attitude and the exchange of dialogue. My
fault. "Rare" honesty, by the way, does not allude to the honesty of
the specific person in question, but the rarity of honesty in general.
Although I would only consider using "rare" in the latter context, it
might have occured to me that others might interpret it in the former
which, again, is my fault.

++++I think that might possibly blow your membership of of the Master
Detectives Society. And also rather rebound upon you, having accused
me of being superficial and making judgements based on bias and
unqualified information. Still, never mind. Not the sort of thing
worth getting into an argument over, I'd have thought. Especially
since "superficial" is kinder than most things said about me...

I don't know if you are serious.
Do retailers hire highly paid psychologists to do the "screening?"
Exactly how does one judge a person's motives by their appearances?
Clothing?
Did he shave that day?
Does that woman have curlers in her hair?
Are her bra straps showing?
Does she wear a revealing tank top?
Age?
Are they speaking in English?
Skin color?
Height?

About 20 years ago a scruffy looking and smelly guy went into a Cadillac
dealership and was ignored until a friend of mine, who then worked there as
a salesman, approached him. The scruffy guy bought four Cadillac for full
list price.

He asked politely.

There's plenty of good reasons to post well, in a conversational
style. Many newbies don't know this, so it's worth a shot to get them up
to speed.

Now, there are people that just don't care, such as yourself. And that
is OK, and noted. You can get away with a lot here, but if you were to
take this attitude into a technical group, you would be pissing in the
wind if you hoped to get help.

BTW, I'm a big guy and *nobody* has ever called me prissy to my face.

I truly wasn't sure. I've seen too many who actually believe they can spot a
thief by his looks.
Now if you had used <sarcastic tags>.....

Which group are you posting from and I'll trim it!

What a diverse collection of groups. Have at it if you wish.

Every group has some wackos in it, the original OP looks like he's the
village idiot of 5 groups. Now that's multi talented!

Perhaps, but certainly if you managed a store I would think it would
go broke much faster.

Quite likely. :-)

Store managers have to work 55-60 hours a week, so they don't have
time to spend at Google Groups. As for the complaint about marking
his recept when he left Sam's Club, I see no problem with that, who
keep receipts for long. What I don't like is when the guy doesn't
have a marker and he just punches a hole on the receipt with a pen out
of ink or anything available with a sharp point. But that is just me,
insensitive to the way people can boss you around.

What a total idiot...

He loves the low prices but objects to their keeping them low by
reducing theft.

Oh, Jesus Christ! Why didn't anyone TELL me we were being cross-
posted!? And me just out of the shower, with wet hair. Lemme go put
some clothes on.

And for crying out loud, next time you go cross-posting, would you
please knock first? Thanks.

Don't know what a message header is? Look in the configurations files

probably under 'posting' or 'messages.

Still have no idea what I'm talking about? Turn your computer off and
