i heard that louis and some other fighters in dempsey day still fought 20 round
fights and during jack johnso day

also if we had a tourny to see who the all time true heavyweight champion
was,but we did a fight with 20 round time limit and 6 ounce gloves who would
your all time great list be? would it change at all?

also we would go back to the 20's era i heaAR THEY USED 4 OZ GLOVES FOR TITLE
FIGHTS,.LOUIS DAY THEY USED 6 OUNCE,JACK JOHNSONS DAY I HEARD 4 OUNCE GLOVES,
they use 10 ounce gloves nowadays,

mine would be

marciano
dempsey
jack johnson
louis
ali
frazier

Joe Louis neither fought a 20 round match nor was scheduled for a 20
round match.

The last scheduled 45 round fight was the fight in 1915 between Jack Johnson
and Jess Willard.(Johnson KO'd in 26)
The last scheduled 25 rounder was in 1941 between Bill Poland and Eddie
Blunt. (Blunt was KO'd in 4)
The last scheduled 20 round fight was in 1971 between Kelly Burden and
Alonzo Harris (Harris KO'd in 10) in Oklahoma City.

The last scheduled 20 round World Title Fight was in 1941 between Joe Louis
and Abe Simon. (Simon KO'd in 13)

Now, dispite the longer fights, the fighters at the championship level
rarely needed a fight to go those long distances. The last world title fight
to go more than 15 rounds was in March, 1923, when Mike McTigue won a 20
round decision over Battling Siki for the world LH title.

Dempsey only fought one fight scheduled for 20 rounds, against Carl Morris.
He KO'd Morris in 14 seconds. He was only scheduled to fight 15 rounds
twice, against Tommy Gibbons (15 round decision) and Jack Sharkey (KO'd
Sharkey in 7). Most of Dempsey's fights ended in KO, so he seldom had to
test his stamina over the long haul.

Jack Johnson fought 14 times in 20 round fights, 11 of those going the
distance. He was KO'd in 3 by Joe Choynski in a 20 round fight. He also
fought in two fights scheduled for 45 rounds, against Jeffries (TKO Jeffries
in 15) and Willard (Johnson KO'd in 26).

Joe Louis was schelduled to fight 20 rounds only once (13 round KO of Abe
Simon). He fought in 29 fights of 15 rounds! Of these, only 4 went the
distance (Lost to Ezzard Charles, won decisions against Walcott, Arturo
Godoy, and Tommy Farr).

Ali had 15 round fights 28 times. Of these, 13 went the distance (Chuvalo,
Terrel, Bonavena, Frazier, Mac Foster, Bugner, Wepner, Jimmy Young, Spinks
two times, Shavers, Evangelista, and Norton).

Frazier had 12 fights of 15 rounds, with only 2 going the distance.

Marciano had 7 fights scheduled for 15. Only 1, the first fight with Ezzard
Charles, went the distance.

Jersey Joe Walcott had 8 fights of 15 rounds. Four went the distance.

Ezzard Charles had 12 fights of 15 rounds, 7 going the distance.

Jim Jeffries, despite a short carrer of only 22 bouts, fought 3 at 20 rounds
that all went the distance, 1 at 25 rounds that went the distance, 1 at 23
against Jim Corbett that didn't have a set number of rounds, a 1 at 45
rounds against Johnson (ending in 15th round KO of Jeffries).

Bob Fitzsimmons fought 4 times at the 20 round schedule, only 1 going the
distance.

Jim Corbett fought most of his longer fights without a pre-set number of
rounds going into the bout. He had 27, 21, 14, 23 round fights that all
ended with KO/TKO and a draw fight with Peter Jackson that went an amazing
61 rounds and went 4 hours!

Max Baer had 2 fights of 20 rounds which went the distance, and 5 fights of
15 rounds, with 2 going the distance.

Max Schmeling had 10 fights of 15 rounds, with 4 going the distance.

Of these champions, the ones who had to go the distance in long fights the
most often were Johnson, Ali, and Charles. Not surprisingly, all three were
great boxers who went for the KO when it presented itself but didn't try to
win by KO every time.

Dempsey stated many times he had no interest in letting a fight go on any
longer than it took to KO his opponent. Marciano said, "Why waltz around
with a guy for 15 rounds if you can KO him in one?"

So, the length of their fights doesn't give a good indication of their
endurance since some of the best conditioned heavyweights still went for an
early stoppage. But, the fact that they were fighting so many scheduled for
15 or more rounds does indicate they probably were conditioned for such long
fights just in case. Current fighters would have to change their training
routines and mindsets to compete against such fighters, just as a sprinter
would need to change to take on a distance runner.

Not true. Louis's match against Abe Simon in 1942 was scheduled for 20
rounds. It was the last 20 round title fight.

Actually Louis did have a title fight scheduled for twenty (I can't
recall the fight). He won by KO before even 15 though. I'll try to
find out the fight. It was the last heavyweight title fight scheduled
for twenty. Kip

us:

Not sure about that Donn. According to Boxingscene.com, they have the
following listing under Joe Louis and 1941:

March 21 - Joe Louis, in the last heavyweight title fight scheduled
for 20 rounds, KOs Abe Simon, 13 rounds, Detroit.

Regards.

Were these three-minute rounds? Or was this still in the time when you
could take a knee to bring a round to an end?

I'd like to know that too. It's hard to imagine two guys boxing for 61
rounds, no matter how tough and durable they were. I read Jim Corbett's
autobiography a year ago. After that fight, he and Peter Jackson met each
other in a steam room to relax. Both were so sore they could barely move.

The fight started at 9:28 PM and ended at 1:33 AM with both men too
exhausted to continue. That's 4 hours and 5 minutes, or 245 minutes.
Allowing 4 minutes per round (3 minute round/1 minute rest) for 60 rounds
and 3 minutes for 1 round (without a following rest period) comes out to 243
minutes. With a probable additional minute or two while it was decided that
neither man was able to continue, that would indicate 3 minute rounds.

The longest gloved fight of all time was April 6-7th 1893 between Andy Bowen
and Jack Burke at New Orleans. It lasted 110 rounds over a span of 7 hours
and 19 minutes, beginning at 9:15 PM and ending at 4:34 AM. It was declared
a draw when both men could not continue. That also works out to 3 minute
rounds.

Of course, there would have been a lot of rounds when neither fighter did
much of anything.

It was already pointed out to me, Kip. My initial sentence was way off
the mark and several of the regulars pointed out me error. However,
when you read the initial sentence, it reads - implies - that Louis
fought in Dempsey's day. It read: " i heard that louis and some other

fighters in dempsey day still fought 20 round fights and during jack

johnso day ."
