Apart from Lennox Lewis, have there been any other boxers who were openly
homosexual?

This is just like back in high school, where most teachers and students were
also rumored to be gay at one time or another.

I'm not too sure that that Emile Griffith is gay...i mean, benny
peret's comment sent him over the edge...and well all know how that
fight turned out.

I actually heard that someone made a movie about the Griffith fight
called like Ring of Fire or something. Maybe the address the issue
there -- anyone seen it??

Without any actual knowledge as to whether Emile Griffith was gay or
not, Benny Paret, during a weigh-in for their third bout, called
Griffith a "maricón," Spanish for homosexual. Griffith worked a
daytime job making women's hat in New York. Could that have been the
basis for Paret's comment? Or could it have been Griffith's Virgin
Island accent that triggered Paret's remark?

In the Peter Heller book, "In this Corner," Griffith denied he was gay,
but that was more than 30 years ago.

Why was it shocking? Is Donald Curry still involved with boxing at any
level?

Paret had Griffith down from a combination of hard shots just before the
end of the 6th round of that tragic bout. I still clearly remember Paret
placing one hand on his hip and blowing a kiss at Griffith after the
bell had sounded. That gesture may have cost Paret his life as Griffith
fought like a madman for the rest of the match. It may have also ticked
off referee Ruby Goldstein as well. He stood by in the fatal 12th and
watched passively as Griffith unloaded a barrage of punches on a
helpless Paret who appeared to be unconscious but unable to fall to the
floor due to one arm being hooked on the ropes. As to whether Griffith
was gay or not, I dunno, but in either case, he sure as hell must not
have liked being accused of that lifestyle.

I hadn't heard of the Heller book. I'd be interested in reading it
before I see that documentary about the fight to compare. Seems as
though no one really knows exactly what went wrong -- so it'd be
worthwhile to compare Heller's opinion to Klores'.

I had no idea that Griffith worked in a woman's hat shop -- this was
while he was fighting???

So Pastor.....If he was gay, is that a sin? Will he be punished for this by
your God? Regardless of if he can help how he feels or not is it still a
religious crime?

On Wed, 02 Feb 2005 19:03:15 GMT, "san" <Sk...@jk.bragor.com>
enlightened us:

Well maybe we'll find out soon if Grifith was gay or not (not that it
really matters). This from United Press International:

" LOS ANGELES, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Plans are under way in
Hollywood to make a movie about former welterweight boxing champion
Emile Griffith, Daily Variety said Thursday.
The paper said Paramount Pictures and Sony Pictures
Entertainment will buy remake rights to the documentary "Ring of
Fire: The Emile Griffith Story," which just had its premiere at the
Sundance Film Festival.
In his most famous fight, Griffith beat Benny "Kid" Paret
unconscious in a nationally televised fight at Madison Square Garden
in 1962. Paret died 10 days after the bout.
Paret, a Cuban, had taunted Griffith, a native of the Virgin
Islands, with the term "Maricon," a derogatory Spanish term for
homosexual. Griffith was not prosecuted and fought for 15 more years
-- winning six titles.
Fallout from Paret's death included calls for boxing to be
banned and a reluctance on the part of broadcasters to televise
bouts."

Yeah, I read that too, but didn't he admit to hanging out in Male strip
clubs or drag bars or something? There was some controversy about the
whole issue...
