Former flyweight champ Eric Morel released from prison

August 9, 2007

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Former WBA flyweight champion Eric Morel was
released from prison Thursday after serving time for sexually
assaulting a teenage girl, and his lawyer said the boxer hopes to
resume his career.

Morel was sentenced to two years in prison and two years of extended
supervision in 2005 after he pleaded no contest to second-degree
sexual assault of a drunken 15-year-old girl in 2002.

Morel was released from Fox Lake Correctional Institution and will
remain on extended supervision until October 2009, said John Dipko, a
spokesman for the state Department of Corrections.

Attorney Victor Arellano said the 31-year-old boxer has been getting
in shape and plans to live in Madison, where his parents and other
family members are.

"He wants to continue in what he does best," Arellano said. "He wants
to continue in boxing and give it another try. He is still young and
will come back strong and committed."

Morel, a 1996 Olympian, won the WBA title in 2000 in Madison. He
successfully defended it five times before losing a unanimous decision
to Lorenzo Parra in Puerto Rico in 2003.

Why would someone want to lick Mick Tyson's anus? Does he have some
delicious poop up there?

Boxer Eric Morel pleads no contest to sexual assault

ASSOCIATED PRESS

2:41 p.m. June 9, 2005

MADISON, Wis. – Former WBA flyweight champion Eric Morel pleaded no
contest Thursday to sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.
The 29-year-old boxer was then found guilty by Judge William Foust of
second-degree sexual assault of a child. The judge did not immediately
schedule sentencing.

Morel, who faces a maximum of 30 years in prison, remained free on
bail. The former Olympic fighter changed his earlier plea of not
guilty.
"Eric had limited involvement in this matter," Morel's attorney,
Victor Arellano, told The Associated Press. "Eric wants to take full
responsibility for the limited role he played."

Morel's half brother, Frederick Santos Perez, 25, of Boston, and the
boxer's brother, Samuel Morel, 37, of Chicago, also were charged with
second-degree sexual assault of a child. The case stems from an
alleged assault Dec. 1, 2002, in suburban Fitchburg.

The victim filed a civil suit against the defendants last October,
seeking unspecified damages. The suit has not been resolved.

Eric Morel fought for the United States at the 1996 Olympics, losing
in the first round. He won the WBA junior bantamweight title in 2000
in Madison and successfully defended it five times before losing a
unanimous decision to Lorenzo Parra in Puerto Rico in December 2003.

Morel fought WBA super flyweight champion Martin Castillo in March,
losing a unanimous decision. He is scheduled to fight Fernando Montiel
on July 16 in Las Vegas for Montiel's WBO super flyweight title.

But a 15 year old teenager should not be called a "child". By 15 a
woman is already physically fully developed. I'm not advocating that
its right for a 31 y/o to have sexual relationtions with someone that
young. I think its wrong, but I think it's also wrong to infatilize
grown teen agers and young adults by calling them "children" at 15,
who at that age are very VERY sexually active and far from being
"innocent".

He only got 2 years in jail so I guess the courts didn't see it as too
bad what he did.

At 15??? You are deemed a child mentally and emotionally... and that

That is BS and you have no clue of what you are talking about. Based
on significant research studies, there is a significant diference
between an adolescent mind and that of a child. Period. Mentally and
emotionally an adolescent of 15 is not an adult yet, but nowhere near
the level of a child. This is a fact and I'm not going to spend
useless time proving my point. But I will say that infantilizing
adolescents is wrong. You will be very surprised how much more mature
15 year olds in other developed countries act compared with the often
infantilized spoiled brats in the US.

Part of legal predicate to the statutory laws for underage criminality
is based on the division of emotional and psychological competence
(developmentalism) as a threshold between that deemed maturated and
that deemed developmental... at 15 you are still deemed to be in a
developmental thus vulnerable state which the law seeks to protect,
i.e. necessarily separates for the purposes of protectionisms... and
thank goodness the law does...

You're missing the point. The point is that the girl was 15
years old and Morel was a full grown man. By law, that's rape. End
of story.
If Morel only did two years, that's too little. He's a rapist
now.

With a competent legal team, Mike The Cager may have been exonerated
although in Indiana, one is almost always guilty regarldless.

ya and in those as back-asswards countries just like the dark ages ya
can marry a 8yr old even tho puberty hasn't come close to that age
till this decade. ( last time I heard on tv it was ranging 10-14
thanks to all the hormones in the meat)

many studies show the adolescent mind isn't done forming till the ages
of 17-20 that is part of the reason the legal drinking age is 21.
(personally i think that 21 should be the sexual consent, voteing, and
selective service age too)

now honestly an adult sexually abusing a 5yr old is more sickening
than a 16yr old but that dosen't make it any more right or legal. even
if their workin the red light district.

personally I think we should just fry their asses and be done with it
as they often do it again. (two eye witnesses or dna gets ya to the
front of the line)

so to sum up my point I don't want him boxing let alone breathing air
that goes double for mikey tyson's wife beating ass (rapist or not)

(on a side note a little timmy treadwell got eaten by bear up here
in alaska not too long ago any time ya wanna come up i'll buy ya a
ticket i bet their hungry what with winter coming and all };-)

And some people never emotionally grow up until in their 30s or 40s,
and some never grow up ;) but that does not make them children.

People that grow up in cultures that infantilize and spoil young
adults tend to mature mentally much later. That is what happened with
the baby boomer generation and their children, end up having 19 and
20+ people still behaving like children. In other places around the
world you have 22 year old doctors, but here we have 22 year olds
still acting like they were in middle school.

> (personally i think that 21 should be the sexual consent, voteing, and

In many other countries is 16, and they are not doing any worse than
here. In fact, I think that alcohol abuse is far a bigger problem
among teenagers in America.
