Fantastic to see Savon becone the third man to win three Olympic boxing
golds. Ibzagimov was brave, but out of his league.
As an aside, a part of the crowd booed when Savon was declared the winner,
which is a disgrace. The arseholes should feel honoured to have been in the
guy's presence.

feel it was a "particularly" good games for their boxing team... jezzzzzz...

Patrick - especially in the face of their boast of taking all
12 medals. Seems as if the Russians have taken over again. Cuba
didn't get the amount and type of medals they are used to.
And, frankly, Savon looked.........amateurish. He's old and
lost his youth. I wasn't too impressed with his finals bout, to tell
you the truth.

Savon is on his way out to be sure but a great ending (near ending) to his
career... first time since 1948 the US were shut out of Olympic gold in
boxing??? Is that correct??? So that makes one in LA and 1 in Barcelona and
now zero... getting to a phase of international parody like none other in
international amateur boxing...

The ref was watching Savon's eye very closely and I think he was going to
stop the fight because of the bleeding had the timekeeper stopped the
clock. I'm glad to see Savon win. I think a stoppage on a cut below the
eye wouldn't have been justified, but it is the rule of amateur boxing to
stop bouts when there is alot of blood. At least that seems the case when
there is a cut.
Did anyone else have the same feeling?

Actually, all the Russians did quite well. };-> And the
Cubans did not live up to their boast of 12 gold medals. Even Castro
should have known better.

I was happy for him. Just glad they can't enter him again in
2004. He's getting like Leonard, Duran and them - doesn't know when
to quit and retire in glory.

Yeah, bummer huh.

Not sure what you mean here. The L.A. Games were in 1984 and
we won 9 gold medals (no Cuba or Russia); next was wonderful Seoul,
where we won 3 gold; 1992 (Barcelona) and 1996 (Atlanta)brought 1
each.

Hmmmm - will have to take another look.

Let's say the ref did say "stop." The official timekeeper is
the electronic scoring system, not the manual bell, stopwatch and
whistle. If the ref did say stop with 2 seconds to go, several things
may have happened. One is that the computer technician did not hear
the command and, therefore, did not stop the computer clock; the
other is that the seconds on the computer clock may have run out at
the time the ref said stop and, at that point, it will automatically
stop the round, unless the computer tech can stop it before it goes to
"0" and the system can, sometimes, be very touchy. I will also tell
you that if a referee does not say his commands loud and clear,
especially when there is a lot of crowd noise, the computer technician
will not hear the referee.
