Former International Boxing Federation super flyweight champion Robert
Quiroga has been stabbed to death in San Antonio, Texas.
Police said Quiroga was found lying next to his car at a crossroads in his
hometown at about 0400 local time (0900 GMT) on Monday.
Investigators have not yet established a motive or identified any suspects
for the killing.
Quiroga held the IBF title from 1990 to 1993, and retired two years later.
Quiroga, who was 35, had been drinking with friends at a bar three blocks
away hours before he was killed.
Police spokesman Sgt Gabe Trevino said officers were called to the crime
scene by a member of the public who found Quiroga's body, San Antonio WOAI
news reported.

I remember that fight well. One of my all time favorites.
Sadly, it was the end of Akeem. I had the pleasure of meeting him in
Las Vegas a couple of years after that. What a gracious and nice man,
in spite of the fact he had major damage to his brain. The last I
heard, before he died, was that he was panhandling on the streets in
Vegas.

>Sad thing about the Quiroga/Akeem fight, the insurance for the fight did not
>cover all the expenses for Akeem's surgery and aftercare. I remember reading an
>article in a boxing magazine a few years after the fight. The article was about
>Akeem and his struggles to adapt to life after boxing. He was still
>contemplating a comeback, even though medical experts said he would never fight
>again.
This is true. He spoke to me about regaining his stature in
the ring. It was very sad.
> If I recall the article correctly, it said that Akeem had gotten into
>dealing drugs for money and had even been arrested for it.
This is also true.
>I was unaware that Akeem had passed away. Did he die from complications from the injuries received
>in the Quiroga fight or some other cause?
I couldn't find anything online, but, if I remember correctly,
he had gone back to Lagos to live. He died while, or after, taking a
shower one morning and it was subsequently blamed on his prior
injuries.
