Here are the fights and the results. In separate posts (to avoid making
one monumental post), I'll write up Ring's outcomes of fights featuring
guys frequently discussed here in RSB. Not all of them, of course; some
of them are rarely, if ever, mentioned in RSB, so I won't bother (unless
asked). I won't editorialize at all, except maybe to offer a few
sentences here or there, quoted directly from the strengths, weaknesses,
or styles sections, in addition to the outcomes, which I'll write up in
their entirety in each post.
Those results I marked with an asterisk (*) are those where the length
of the fight isn't specifically mentioned in the text, but I think it's
safe to assume that all fights were over 15 rounds rather than 12.
Also, the fights are organized by weight class, heavy through to fly,
which allows us to determine at which weight certain fights were fought
(in particular, Charles/Jones, SRRobinson/Leonard, and Duran/Whitaker).
Because, you know, we all love these fantasy matchups. :)

Thanks for sharing that. Funny thing is that the outcomes that I most
strongly personally disagree with are:
>Ezzard Charles v. Roy Jones - Jones SD 15
>Archie Moore v. Michael Spinks - Spinks UD*
>Billy Conn v. Bob Foster - Conn UD*
>Victor Galindez v. Dwight Muhammad Qawi - Muhammad Qawi TKO 11
All light heavyweight bouts. Go figure.

Uhh, I'll take my chances.

Sure. Figured it would generate some more discussions, even if they
might be a bit repetitious of stuff we talk about all the time anyway.
I don't often read the monthly mags anymore, but I happened to see it at
the grocery store yesterday, so I picked it up.

I assumed a LOT of people would disagree with those lt.heavy bouts you
mentioned. I hadn't planned to write up the Galindez-MQawi bout, but
since you included it with the other three, I shall.

Pie,
Thanks for this article. I agreed with mose of these.

One thing's for sure. That would be a great f'ing fight.
>> Muhammad Ali v. Mike Tyson - Ali TKO 13
Easy night.
>> Joe Frazier v. Rocky Marciano
Pure pick 'em. Hell of a fight.
>> Sonny Liston v. Evander Holyfield - Liston MD*
Heh heh heh. I have to give the nod to Liston. Another hell of a
fight.
>> Gene Tunney v. Jack Johnson - Johnson KO 10
Johnson is hard to evaluate. I think Tunney might be able to box
himself to a successful win. But if it's scheduled for 25....
>> Larry Holmes v. Jersey Joe Walcott - Holmes (T)KO 11
Another great styles matchup. Be a lot of whipping this night.
>> George Foreman v. Lennox Lewis - Lewis (T)KO 10
That one's a joke. Foreman destroys Lewis. Foreman KO 2 Lewis.
>> Ezzard Charles v. Roy Jones - Jones SD 15
They say Split Decision? I say SD for Charles.
>> Archie Moore v. Michael Spinks - Spinks UD*
It's hard to go against either man. There have been a large handful
of great light heavyweights. I'd love to see any of 'em in the ring together.
>> Billy Conn v. Bob Foster - Conn UD*
Ha ha. Bring it on!
>> Matthew Saad Muhammad v. Jose Torres - Saad Muhammad TKO 9
Gimme Saad Muhammad against anyone, anytime. One of my all time
favorite fighters.
>> Harry Greb v. Marvin Hagler - Greb SD*
loki must imagine the Ring editors simple dicks, having made a pick
involving someone of whom there is so little film. And to beat Hagler, no
less!
But that's the thing. So easy to know a lot about Greb. No excuse
not to. sorry, hemaphrodite... I own you.
>> James Toney v. Gene Fullmer - Toney KO 7
How 'bout "heavyweight" Toney vs. prime Holyfield?
Holyfield by TKO 5.
I think a real heavyweight (not an old heavyweight) would whip up on
Toney. He's getting some props for stopping the old man. I'd like to see how
he'd fare against Gomez. I can see him fighting Byrd, and getting *very*
pissed off with Byrd!
In the meantime, bring on RJJ v. Toney II.
>> Ray Robinson v. Ray Leonard - Robinson UD*
This is a good pick. Leonard's getting a lot of respect. His
reputation is quite high, but it will only continue to grow.
Unless he steps into the ring with Camacho again... ;-)
>> Carmen Basilio v. Thomas Hearns - Hearns KO 7
Great matchup. Basilio could go to hell and back. Be a great fight.
Hearns was one of the best, but if Carmen landed some nice chin shots...
>> Jose Napoles v. Fritzie Zivic -
RIP
>> Wilfred Benitez v. Kostya Tszyu - Tszyu KO 14
I'm glad to see Tszyu listed. He's a great, and very natural,
fighter. I think his historical stock will only rise, but as I said earlier,
he needs a couple more big wins.
>> Roberto Duran v. Pernell Whitaker - Whitaker SD 15
Two of the greatest. What a matchup. The slick, vicious, crazed,
bull vs. the chess master. Duran wouldn't have to worry about Pep's offense.
Duran beat a peak Ray Leonard. This one's kind of a pick 'em. I've got a
feeling Duran would be able to catch Whitaker and lay the heavy leather on him.
Duran by late stoppage.
>> Benny Leonard v. Henry Armstrong - Armstrong MD*
Maybe.
>> Panama Al Brown v. Fighting Harada - Harada MD*
:-))
BoxMuham
Hey mostly me too, though I can see RJJ decisioning Ezzard but only because
dood styles make fights.
