AAP --
Former world boxing champion Jeff Harding appeared in a Sydney court today
charged with breaching an apprehended violence order and common assault.
The 1989 light heavyweight title-holder, 35, unemployed, and without a
permanent address, was arrested this morning on an inner-city Sydney street.
Magistrate Allan Moore amended Harding's apprehended violence order
conditions to cover his wife's place of work.
Police unsuccessfully opposed bail and Harding was due to reappear in court
on January 17.

Sad. Harding was a great opportunist, and his fights (well, the first and
the third anyway) with Andries were classics.
He hit like a mule, had perhaps the most underrated chin ever, great fitness
and virtually no defense to speak of. Add to this a propensity to cut, and
Harding's fights were always exciting. A quick Harding story.........
In the late 80s I was living inner-Sydney suburb and would do road-training
early in the morning. One morning, I was running and noticed a tall, black
track-suited figure running about 40 yards behind me. The hood of the track
suit was pulled up and I could not get a good look at his face. I sped up a
little to shake him off, but he maintained the same distance. I slowed
down...he slowed down to maintain the distance between us...and so on and so
on for about a mile or so.
I got a bit shitty....what was this clown trying to prove???...so I stopped
and turned around ready to give this jerk a piece of my mind...and by now
you've guessed it...it's Jeff Harding. Gulp. Harding stopped and gave me a
big back slap that almost knocked me off my feet and with a big smile said
something like.."I was just playing with your head...I was bored and thought
it might be funny".
Lucky for me I saw the lighter side of it, and we ran off for a few more
miles before our paths diverged. I ran on and off for a couple of months
with Jeff, and while I can't say we talked all that much he impressed me
with his quiet inner strength.
Jeff also had a big love of ales of various descriptions, and was
unfortunate enough to run into trouble at the local pub when his love of
booze collided with the bravado of some jerk wanting to prove himself. Jeff
would never back down, which is not a good look. None of this is
tittle-tatting...it's on the public record :(
I hope Jeff gets his act back together. He's a good bloke.
