From about 1978-1992 Caesars Palace in Las Vegas hosted the most
important pro boxing matches. If a big fight was coming up, chances are it
would be held at Caesars. These bouts were held indoors at the Sports
Pavilion, or outdoors in a temporary arena on the tennis courts. Examples:
Holmes-Norton, Leonard-Benitez, Holmes-Ali, Sanchez-Gomez; Leonard-Hearns;
Holmes-Cooney; Pryor-Arguello 2, Hagler-Duran, Hagler-Hearns,
Leonard-Hagler. Yet its been years since a big fight was held there. Why
did Caesars get out of the pro boxing business?

Then the Mirage Hotel happened. Then all of the other mega-mega hotels. The
Caesars wasn't the big guy on the strip by a long shot anymore.

I can't keep track of who owns what in Las Vegas, but isn't the Caesers in the
fold with another big, big hotel or two in Las Vegas?

Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand started putting up higher site fees for the Big
fights.

In the near future, look for the Midwest Great Lakes and Mississippi River
Casinos to become a major player in the fight game.

Doesn't Caesers and Mandalay Bay have something to do with one another. I
went to the Vargas v Quartey fight at Mandalay but the weigh-in was at
Caesers.

I think Caesars and the University of Las Vegas (UNLV) once joined up
to host the 1st Riddick Bowe-Evander Holyfield matchup in Nov. 1992.

Seems to me that Steve Wynn came in and muscled (aka money) his way into the
scene. He signed Buster Douglas to the fight with Holyfield IIRC and spent
$24 million on Buster's paycheck for that fight. Wynn really wanted in on
the Vegas boxing scene IIRC.

Fan Man happened.

I guess insurance cost a bit more to host a fight there now.

Yes, Steve Wynn is the reason Buster turned into Jabba the Hut after the Tyson
fight! ;-)

There was a fair amount of media attention about Wynn muscling in on Las Vegas
boxing, as you state. Buster was a bust for The Mirage. Other groups of
investors threw up some big hotels. Hotels were sold, bought, merged. I can't
keep track of who owns what in Las Vegas any longer. I know Wynn is a major
player, running a few of them. I can't recall how Caesars played out in the
ownership shuffles.

I knew there had been a lot of merging and buying. Like I said, too much for me
to keep score.

ceasars palace is in the middle of doing alot construction for what seems like
the past year now. I know they have built a sports stadium that resembles the
roman collisium. With that being completed I belive they will start to have
more fight cards once again

I've never been to a fight in Vegas, but if Caesars builds a replica of the
Roman Colliseum and put the Christians against the lions, I'm there! ;->

Caesars & Mandalay Bay hate each other. MB is Circus Circus, now
called Madalay Resorts. Caesars is Caesar Entertaiment, formerly Park
Place, formerly Hilton.

Mandalay Bay is big money to sisters Luxor, Excalibr & Circus Circus.
Caesars has Bally's & Paris til they are sold, with Flamingo (the
first timeshare in Vegas). LV Hilton isn't Hilton anymore tho is 4
sales in 2 years have fallen into the garbage disposal. So it will be
a timeshare as the surrounding area is already.
