Man, 64 years old. That seems awfully young to die from Alzheimer's. I
wonder how much boxing contributed to Roger's death. He was a good fighter,
but I recall he took some big-time punishment when he went up against Dick
Tiger and Bob Foster.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) Former light heavyweight boxer Roger Rouse is dead of
Alzheimer's at the age of 64.
A mortuary notice listing cause of death said Rouse, an Anaconda, Mont.,
native, died Sunday at his Helena residence.
A football standout at Anaconda and the University of Montana, Rouse took up
boxing while recovering from a knee injury. He won a Golden Gloves title in
1954 at Chicago and accepted a boxing scholarship at Idaho State.
He was twice NCAA champion and became a member of the 1956 Olympic boxing
team, losing a quarterfinal decision in Australia to Gilbert Chapron of
France. Rouse turned professional in 1958 and became the No. 1 light
heavyweight contender in 1965. He fought for the light heavyweight
championship of the world three times, losing once to Dick Tiger and twice
to Bob Foster.
He was inducted into the Idaho State Hall of Fame in 1977.
He retired from boxing in 1972 and worked at the Anaconda Co. Smelter in
Anaconda until it closed in 1980.
Survivors include his wife, Avis, and two sons.
A service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Assembly of God Church in
Anaconda.

When I first began working in the health care setting I was surprised
to find out that Alzheimer's at that age happens frequently enough. I
recently dealt with a custodial issue of a family of a lady who was an
Alzheimer's patient in her mid-50s.
Not attempting to armchair diagnose Roger Rouse's case, but that he
died from this did not shock me when I read it.
