Is Mickey Rourke still fighting (I'm not talking about beating up Carre otis)
I remember his having a few fights a few years ago - he won them all - did he
just give up or did someone kick his butt?

Rourke quit boxing after Carlos Monzon -- yes Monzon! -- kayoed him in a
sparring session. Rourke got feisty with the ex-champ and Carlos knocked him
cold.

Mike,

Thanks for the response, but isn't Monzon dead?

When and where did Rourke spar with him?

Monzon is dead. They sparred in the prison where Monzon was being
incarcerated. Monzon hadnt sparred or done any type of boxing training
in years, yet he still managed to lay Rourke out. Supposedly, as Rourke
laid on the floor unconcious, the people who accompanied him to the
prison stood over him and started taking pictures.

Ryan's version of the story is pretty much the one I heard; Rourke was
visiting Monzon while doing preliminary work on a movie about Monzon's life
IIRC.

And someday, I will find those photos...

I don't hear anybody else laughing. Who said it took place recently. Years
ago I read about Monzon knocking the arrogant Rourke out cold. I never read
of Mickey disputing such.

It happened a while back when Rourke was doing research for the lead
role in a movie about Monzon.

Met Rourke about 8 years ago in Miami through Tommy Torino. Torino was Rourke's
matchmaker/manager etc.. he found all of Mickey's opponents and he would spar
with them too. If they even showed a little skill, he would not even think of
allowing them in the ring with Rourke. I only met Rourke once and it was quite
a spectacle. He had a reputation for being pretty "free" with his money. Had
millions and spent it like he did. The day I meant him he sent one of his
"hangers on/gohpher/yes men, to get him a bottle of Gatorade. He whipped out a
wad of cash, gave the stiff a twenty and when the "Rory Holloway/John Horne"
little dude came back, he gave Mickey 15 bucks and Mickey had a shitter. He
asked how much a Gatorade cost and went off saying the guy was ripping him off.
It was a riot watching Mickey chase this little dink around the gym. A
millionaire playboy chasing a guy for 3 bucks.

Rourke's a punk who's having a hard time finding work in his own profession. He
was fighting losers to enhance his then "bad boy" image and was never taken
seriously. Boxing must look easy to the untrained eye of the egomaniac but all
those badass football crossovers never created a ripple in the pond. Latest
casualty Lorenzo Highsmith who at least had enough class to realize that he
could not compete on the professional level.

Is Highsmith officially done?

I actually liked him as a fighter. He wasn't going to compete on a world class
level, but unlike many football players turned boxers (and certainly unlike Mickey
Rourke), he seemed to actually work hard learning to fight. You could see he was
spending serious time in the gym: By about '97 he had a decent jab, to go along
with his natural strength, toughness and athleticism. He'd have presented a solid
test for lots of fringe contenders.

Yes. His last 3 fights against marginal competition resulted in 2 draws and a
loss. Just because you look great & work hard does not make you a boxer.

I read the story before he died in the car crash.

In the same vein, I recall reading an article where the author observed
Mickey hitting the punch mits with his trainer. Mickey would throw a
couple of combos and clinch, throw a couple of combos and clinch. Only
time the author saw a guy train to clinch when his coach was working the
punch mits with him.

Is it true that the actor Robert Conrad fought and beat Mickey
Rourke a few years ago. I did read where
Conrad said in a interview that he would like to box him. I didn't think
it was true.Being Conrad was in his late fiftys at the time this was to
have happened .I do know Conrad fought that actor that was it the show
about cab drivers in New York that was a boxer and lost to him.( Conrad
lost) . So the fight with Rourke could have happened ??
