Anyone having videos or information regarding this fight please
reply with info. There were two fights, one in 1973 and one in 1978 of
either one.

Sugar Ray Leonard started pro in '77. Maybe the first was an amateur fight?

I don't know about their amateur bout in 1973, but I'm fairly certain
the 1978 professional match was never filmed. I have a book about Leonard
that documents his early fights and lists which network broadcast each of
his matches. None was listed for the Shields fight in 1978. For the
record, Shields won the 1973 amateur fight via a 3-round decision, and
Leonard won a 10-round decision in 1978 as a pro.

And if my memory is correct, it was a very close fight. Many people
thought Ray got a home town decision.

Shields was a good fighter. He took Cuevas the distance, took Tommy
Hearnes, who had never gone beyond 10, into the 13th round, and I
think (but could be wrong) he also beat Palimino as an amateur.

It was based in no small part on his KO over Shields that we
Sacramentans thought Pete Ranzany might have been better than he was.

Randy Shields was also a no-nonsense boxing commentator. Randy was
the analyst for HBO's delayed broadcast of Leonard-Hearns I in 1981, and he
frequently interrupted or disputed many of Larry Merchant's opinions.

Concerning Sheilds...

1) Didnt he once wear lowtop rubber-soled track
shoes in a professional fight?

2) Is he the one who critisized Angelo Dundee for say "You're blowing it son,
you're blowing it?" during the Leonard vs Hearns PPV telecast?

I don't know about that.

Yes. Randy Shields and Larry Merchant argued about that. Merchant
thought Leonard deserved the scolding from Dundee; Shields thought it would
do psychological damage to Leonard's confidence.
