ADDING INJURY TO INSULT: HEARNS' HAND BROKEN?

LAS VEGAS -- Dr. Fred Lewerenz, medical adviser of the Kronk boxing team,
said Thomas Hearns might have fractured his right hand in his middleweight
championship fight with Marvin Hagler Monday night.

"The injury is to the bone leading from the knuckle of his ring finger,"
Lewerenz said. 'It will have to be x-rayed and then treated."

THE HEARNS DIAGNOSIS: TWO BROKEN BONES IN RIGHT HAND

Thomas Hearns broke two bones in his right hand during the first round of
his loss to Marvin Hagler in the middleweight championship fight Monday night,
but in a spot that should heal completely, his doctor said Wednesday.

Hearns will have the hand in a cast for three to six weeks.

END

No wonder why Hagler started to walk right through Hearns, shrugging off
Hearns' right hands.

Hagler walked through the right hands in the first round. He did take
step back after he was momentarily stunned, but never really forsook his
forward advance.

Broken hand or not, I think Hagler was meant to win that match.

Yeah but the fact that Hagler didnt go down from punches that were so hard they
broke the Hitman's hand shows you something about Hagler's chin. That fight was
truly division best power vs. division best chin.

Having never been x-rayed for a broken hand, I wonder if it
is normal procedure for someone to go two days after a hand is
broken for him to get an x-ray. It's one thing for a "normal"
person to do such, it's entirely another for a boxer, one who
just got knocked out in a very high-profile match to boot, to
wait that amount of time. Did Hearns not voice any concern over
the pain he was experiencing? Oh well, it's cited. Thanks for
going the extra mile for us digging through old articles.

Hagler was stunned once by a punch, he was not close to going
down however. Hearns was winded early and was off-balance more
than once before he went down. Even if Hearns' hand was fine,
I don't think it would have mattered, he was too tired to make it
much longer. Hagler had a chin that walked through everyone he
fought.

Agreed. Hearn's punches were bouncing off of Hagler's forehead. Perfect
recipe for a broken hand.
