In the Benn case, the slip made no difference. On the two cards Benn
lost, the margins were eight and four points. On the card he won, I doubt
that Chuck Giampa was even watching the fight anyway. Steele's decision
had no effect other than the "adding insult to injury" effect. To be
perfectly honest, Benn took such a pasting he was probably grateful for
the breather.

I think Richard Steele had the misfortune of making two slip-ups in very
high profile fights. His rep is generally good, but it's his misfortune
to pull the trigger too soon when the world is watching.

I had read something a while ago about Steele's day job being a pit boss
in one of the big casinos, and it occurred to me that this might create
the appearance of a conflict of interest problem that a smart ref would
avoid. Anyone know any more on this?

Why bring this horse up again? It is dead, buried and shows no signs of
reincarnation.

Steeles sucks, but not because of Taylor Chavez. He does interfere, is vague in
his commands, and last night in the Benn fight, stood there for about four long
seconds while trying to figure out if the crowd/officials wanted him to rule it
a slip or a knockdown. Then he noticed he had his hand up and figured he
may as well start counting.

Pathetic.

I don't agree with your opnion on Richard Steele. He has made some contro-
versial decisions, but these have been made in difficult situations. He
seems to care about the fighters, and gives safety a high priority.

It's hard to rank referees, but Frank Capuccino is one of my favourites.
He never puts on a show, never does or says more than absolutely necessary,
and lets the fighters sort it out for themselves.

Best referees:

1. Frank Capuccino
2. Richard Steele
3. Mills Lane

The worst referee I know is Knut Jensen of Denmark. I sometimes seriously
question the mental health of this guy. He SUCKS both as a referee and a
points judge. I have seen fights in which helpless journymen have stumbled
around the ring for several rounds without Jensen stopping the carnage.
Ron Lipton is also pretty bad, looking scared and nervous all the time, as
if he fears he will loose control of the fight at any moment.

Worst referees:

1. Knut Jensen
2. Ron Lipton

He does it all the time! Put his controversial calls aside, he STILL interferes
with the action, is inconsistent, and I think all the controversy has made him
gunshy of making decisive calls, which he really needs to do.

Emotion aside, there ARE worse referees, such as Padilla and Lipton, to name a
couple.

Rest snipped

Yeah Mate I remember the first Chavez - Taylor fight and if you think
the American was 'on the ropes covering up' or 'only slightly hurt' then
you're blind! One more punch and there could have been yet another
tragedy in boxing history.
