How about a solid steel table, like the SAM'S Kim Steele?

Olhausen and Gandy are junk tables. AMF and Brunswick are solid tables.
It's best to go with the Commercial models for better play. The best
table will be the Gold Crown made by Brunswick (except I dont like the way
the rail inserts are installed on the rails which fasten it to the slate,
they tend to spin around sometimes and are difficult to replace). The AMF
(top commercial model) is a good table but doesn't have the same quality
as the Brunswick. We just purchased seven of them a year ago. My
favorite table is the older Brunswick II or the Aniversary or Centenial,
you should be able to find one of these for about $2000 to 2,500. Let me
know if you have a specific question about a table. I have 25 years of
experiece working on them.

> experiece working on them. What a crock, calling all olhausen and Gandy tables. You are deffinately
wrong. First of all I've been playing almost 40 yrs. and have played
with and traveled with some of the best. 2nd of all your statement is
narrow minded at best and totally stupid at best. Gold Crowns are the
stantard for two reasons they do play well and Brunswick utilizes their
moneey well. The Olhausen is been getting strong reviews with the Pro's
and has been said their Accu-fast rails are the best. The Gandy Big G has
been one of the top Commercial tables in the world for years(By the way I
own 17 of them and I'll put mine up against any gold crowns) And don't
forget Diamonds and Kim Steele. Don't make blanket statements every
manufacturer has had a bad table or two. Gives us a break.....Pat

Answer: None of the above
Best table, in my eyes anyway = definitely Brunswick

Another way to come at the question of best table is to list what
can be wrong with a table. Here are some of those things, some of
which may be due to bad installation:

flimsy construction
flimsy trim
pocket liner turns gummy and comes off on cue stick
pocket liner fits badly, catching and rejecting balls
pocket liner fastening falls apart
pocket liner tacks are exposed and chip balls
badly designed rack-hanger
badly designed bridge-hanger
pockets stick up too high
pockets have sharp parts that can tear clothes or cut hands
pockets reject balls that are shot straight in
pocket facings cupped and reject balls
"drop pockets" allow the balls to rattle for several seconds
flimsy score wheels
thin slate
unheated
aluminum parts leave black marks on clothes
awkward ball storage slots
ball return system loses balls
rail rubber badly installed or loose
cloth put on wrong
rails misaligned (side noses not in line)
loose rails (either hard to bolt on or just neglected)
cracked slate
diamond markings are hard to see
ball return hopper skins knuckles
ball return hopper decomposes

These are some of the problems I've had with tables. Others, anyone?

Interestingly, I notice that I break mine (I bought a bunch of them
loose) when I spin them backwards. Maybe this is a good way to test
them.

There goes my SAMS. I hope the garbage men are in good shape.

Jeffery,
I have found that the Gandy manufactured tables are the only ones
that have the traits you listd as having a preference for, ie solid
wood table with no plywood.
While there is plywood found in the construction of the legs and
crossmember, there is far less than in a Brunswick and certainly
Olhausen.
The only difference I could find between a Gold crown and the Gandy
Big G was the $1000 price difference.

Sounds like the Gold Crown III bug list to me. Hey, John, how does the Kim
Steel stack up to this list? (Anything to get your focus off the dreaded
thread from hell...)

I've played on all three touring tables and find I like the Big G the
best. It seems to play faster than AMF, and the accu-fast rails on the
Olhausen change the angles from what the other tables do with k-66
rails. The price on an AMF is probably better than 5000 for a Gandy, but
it's all in construction and who puts it together. Or maybe i'm just
babbling.. Every salesman will tell you what you want to hear. Play on
these tables yourself and then you'll know what you like. It's your
table, not ours. Good luck & happy spending!!

There really isn't any trim on the SAM's.

None of the above seem to appear.

Actually, I like both the rack hanger and bridge hanger on the SAM's.

Nope, nothing there.

No score wheels on my table.

Damn.

No ball storage slots. The table is set up for them, but they aren't there.
Maybe they were lost.

No ball return.

Very easy to see.

Again, no ball return.

Didn't work.

You consider the Gandy better than the Kim Steele?

I will say this for the SAM's --- it is bulletproof.

The original question was Gandy,AMF, or Olhausen. The person never
mentioned Kim Steele, another person on the newsgroup did. I don't mind
the Steele's myself, but how much is this person planning to spend on
his table? My pool room even charges more to play on them. Anyway, out
of those three tables I like the big G for durability and smooth action.

The context shifted during the discussion, hence the confusion. Come to
think of it, I believe that has happened in this newsgroup before. :)

GANDY Snooker table/ commercial grade is the best table made. I have played on mine for 20 years, I am selling it because I have no room in new house. It does have particle board with veneer on the sides, but you never notice that anyway. What makes these tables the best is thick slate, solid teak wood frame and six strong legs...I will be asking 2000.00 for it when I get the rails replaced and new felt put on.......
