I was browsing through an old copy of my alumni magazine, and I'm old
enough now to skip the birth notices but read the obituaries. I came
across the following short note:

Donald Lewis Tees, B.Sc. '75. On October 7, 2008 in New Hamburg,
Ontario, aged 61.

Since the name, age and approximate location are correct, I assume this
is our own Don Tees, who used to have a snooker table in his loft and a
penchant for frowned-upon cigarettes. I hope they've got your stuff in
heaven, Don. Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

Sorry to hear that. Donald was a very interesting guy and one of the more
interesting computer old-timers around, as well. But it seems he stopped posting
altogether in early 2001.

It seems appropriate that when I checked him just now on Google Groups, the
first posting that popped up read:

"....And yes, Ted. I know that it is killing me. But I am going to die one
day, like it or not. So is everyone. It is no more dangerous than driving on a
four-laner, which, granted is quite dangerous. However, all of living is
dangerous. At some point, however, it is MY life. I see ex-addicts afraid
to go out, and alcoholics afraid to go into a bar every day. I decided when
I quit that I was going to LIVE without cocaine. Not shrivel up and hide.

Donald - live and let live."

RIP, Donald.

The cigarettes in question fell onto the wrong side of the "War on

Is this a typo(2001)? I am sure I recall him posting last year at the
least. I should know as I was one of those he disapproved of as he often
accused me of being a Conservative politically.

Regardless of all of that I enjoyed him as an opponent and occasionally
as an ally. When it came to computers and programming he was very
knowledgeable. I had been wondering where he had gone too. I figured he
had just given up on this group and moved on as so many have.He will be
missed.

I love it when all you old geezers get around, and talk about the old
days, and remember all the old farts you once knew who kicked the
bucket. This means your brains are dead, and you think in the past,
and forward thinking has ended for you. Perhaps checkers in the park,
would be a better location for you, than a progressive chat site
founded upon sharing knowledge? Or your area ole peoples home or

No typo -- that's his last post listed in Google Groups. Of course, he may have
changed names or accounts, and I might have missed the newer ID. But I did

Yes, Donald certainly posted here after 2001. I recall within the last
year, but, time goes a little faster the older you get, but not THAT
fast... Donald was a good guy, despite his left wing mantra. I doubt
his pot smoking harmed him much, more than likely it was hours spent
sitting at the computer that killed him.

Yes he was a good guy. You used to get into it with him as much or more
than he but it never had a really nasty tone to it the way things
sometimes get. It worries me a bit. My wife had a heart attack this year
and they don't know why and with my family history I thought it would be
me. I'm not ready to get old yet and don't really think of myself as
being old but when someone you know just drops off like that it makes
you think twice.

It was definitely a religious experience , I was sure I was about to meet
my maker , words cannot describe how scared I was !! I went to see my
family doctor yesterday and he wants to change my blood pressure
medication to me taking it in the mornings rather than the evening and I
am not to happy about that either . The last time the doctor monkeyed with
my blood pressure meds I ended up in the hospital also !

Just some personal musings about Donald if anybody's interested... my
memory isn't that great so if anybody is able, please correct me.

Donald was what you'd call a 'character'. He always reminded me of
George Carlin when he had the pony-tail and he had a similar sense of
humor - subversive and clever. In his later years he stood out like a
sore thumb in a crowd - refusing to cut his astonishing shock of pure
white hair, as he said, "until there was no war anywhere in the
world..." In that respect, he was perhaps still a hippie throwback to
the 1960's and 70's and grew and smoked his own pot in his loft. A
recovered drug addict, he volunteered to help displaced or stoned
street addicts and boarded a number of them at his loft if they had
nowhere to go. In that respect, he was a forgiving and compassionate
man.

Don played in all but one (I think) of the 17 Great White North pool
tournaments we organized. Nine ball wasn't his game - he was
accustomed to playing 8-ball with small balls on his snooker table.
Not that that stopped him from winning the very first one ( come to
think of it - that may have actually been 8-ball. Gideon would
remember). I always enjoyed playing against him - we spent more time
talking about old programming languages and computer equipment than
pool. One time he brought with him a comic award he had created for
the 'worst player'... sort of a skunk trophy... it was a white cane
with a perfectly serviceable ferrule and a leather tip.
Characteristically for Don, he never actually presented it to
anyone... thinking it might be seen as a slight versus a joke.

I understand he made a comfortable living from writing software for
industrial applications such as computerized weigh scales and
warehousing. I never got to visit him at his loft although he was an
intensely social man and invited us many times - it was a mere two
hour trip and I wish I'd made the effort now. I know he hosted pool
and music evenings weekly for his circle of friends - and I understand
there were some accomplished players in attendance both in the pool
world (eg. Kirk Stevens - Canadian snooker champion) and in the music
world.

He was devastated when the RCMP raided the warehouse where he lived as
nominal caretaker and discovered the owner was growing thousands of
pot plants in the unoccupied building. They stopped by Donald's loft
and asked if he had any pot plants - Donald basically said "Yes, for
my own personal use..." They took a cursory look at his half-dozen
plants, shrugged and turned a blind eye. But ultimately the building
was condemned and he was forced to move and sell the snooker table for
which he no longer had sufficient space.

He loved the loft and even published pictures of it and the snooker
table with links here on RSB. Looked like a great space...

I didn't know that particular detail -- I knew he had weekly parties at
which his own unique pool game was featured for those interested -- but
I didn't know he'd had the likes of Kirk Stevens over. I'm too lazy to
open a browser and google, but I recall that Kirk won the Crucible a
couple of times, and so was a World Champion, not just Canadian. (As
was another Canadian with some drug issues, Cliff Thorburn, who
sometimes plays around the corner from your house as I recall.)

Like you, I thought about making the trip and now wish I had.

I believe he moved from a loft into a former cinema, with concomitant
issues of floor leveling, so it was more topography than area which
forced him to sell. I wonder if he'd also lost interest to some extent?

Donald to me was a prototypical old hippy, although I must say that I
am suprised at how young he was - I would have put him in his 60s back
in the early days of the GWN. Maybe the hair fooled me.

I did get out there once. I think it was when George McBain was in
town. He had a great place and didn't laugh at me too much as I
bunted the balls around that vast table in futility.

David, you mentioned elsewhere that you work with his nephew. Would
you please pass to him that Donald touched the lives of many in the

and that his passing is a great loss to us, that we miss him, and that

Thanks, Mark0. I must confess that when the noise level got too high
in this group I kinda dropped out of the internet pool scene. I could
never figure out where everyone went - whether it was AZ billiards or

Gideon is excused for his absence, but not for omitting that he was also
busy on his honeymoon in the Cote d'Azur with his beautiful bride.

Congratulations.

'Busy'... is that what they call it nowadays...? <g>

I'm a little peeved we all weren't invited to the wedding though...

Well, the venue only held 150 people, and with my beautiful bride
coming from an Italian/French Canadian background (i.e., large family,
all of whom need to be invited), let's just say that I was lucky I got
invited!

As for the bachelor party, Lou, my friends took me to Montreal, where
we had excellent food and went to the library.

Gideon<----that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

I know what you mean - I didn't know hardly anyone at my wedding.

Yet another earthquake... you sure like to live dangerously, Dean.

We're all cool, but I've relocated for a year or so to Aceh, just to be
closer to the action ;-) I didn't even feel the last one, which is a
bit surprising as I'm now on the same island, but I don't pretend to
know how these things work.

We used to call the library evening "vespers."
