Any of you cuemaker/repairman types have a few of these old ferrules
lying around the shop? Are they still available...new/old stock
somewhere maybe??

Thanks for any help,
C.E.

They haven't been made in years and they will never be made again. Yellow
micarta was made by Westinghouse for their electronics and I have been told
a number of times that it had a asbestos base. Westinghous has said there
isn't enough money in N.Y. for them to make that material again.
Every once in awhile you run into someone who has a little. It used to be
very populer with knife makers to use as handles. I know someone who has a
piece large enough for two ferrules and he wants 200.00 for it with the
reasoning that " unlike ivory which is getting scarcer and more expensive,
yellow micarta is extinct and will never be again.

I'm going to display my ignorance here, but other than the color, how is the
yellow micarta different from the white micarta that is regularly used for
points and inlays? Couldn't that be used as a ferrule materiel? Or is the
yellow stuff preferred just because it has an "aged" look?

yellow micarta looks like old ivory mah jong tiles, although the mah
jong tiles look a little deeper and yellower. schon used 'em too.

the old yellow micarta has a different hit from the new stuff. i got a
couple of pieces for a fancy, pre 90's southwest. i wanted to bring
back the original hit of that cue.

the hit is hard but dull,,,,not crisp. ivory, for instance, is crisp
and lively, aegis is hard almost ceramic-like. i tend to think of old
micarta as a very very very hard fiber ferrule-type(your standard
house cue ferrule) hit,,,and i would describe the fiber ferrule as
dull, as in if you compressed a wet telephone book.

old micarta wasn't better, just different, and imo perfect for SW's
dry hit.

good luck...i posted this exact message a long time ago. the response
i got was to try a few cuemaker leads. that's the best way. the only
one i didn't try was bluegrass cues. try him.

i'll tell you that a very well known cuemaker emailed me privately,
having read my post, AND GAVE ME TWO PLUGS FREE!!!!! a super-nice
gesture, and i will always remember his generousity. i don't think it
proper to reveal his name, as he had a limited amount. however, if he
reads your post and wants to, he will email you. or you might stumble
onto him.

The last time I had one replaced (couple of years ago or so), Mike Gulyassy
had some old Schon ferrules and did mine.

Same thing was offered to me by what has to be the same gentleman.
He's definitely a class-act, as well as a premier cuemaker...I'll
leave it at that.

Thanks (you know who you are!)

Among a lot of great cuemakers out there, little touches like this win
life-long customers.

Along the same vein, Murray Tucker (who wasn't the ferrule
donator...btw) was another class-act when I bought a cue of his
(second-hand at that).

P.S.
One other question I forgot to ask, which I am sure the aforementioned
gentleman would have answered. Has anyone had good/bad result with
particular adhesives when using this old Micarta (Westinghouse??) ?

I think so... 1 1/8 square by 5"... that would yield 16 1" ferrules if
my math is right...that should be some cheap experimenting

Atlas Billiards sells the same material.
They cost about $1.65 each as a square.

http://www.cuestik.com/Products.asp?GroupID=120

I dont see them listed in their catalog but I think they also sell that material
made as a ferrule also.
