Hi,

snooker cues are made from ash.
Can anyone explaine why there is no pool shafts made from ash?
Ash is a very hard wood, it must be realy interesting to play pool with it?

A lot of Americans think they're ugly.

I wouldn't mind a pool shaft of ash though, since I actually think the dark
grain is nice to look at.

I've made a number of 8-ball shafts from ash. The only problem is, because
of the open grain, they can not be made as smooth as maple, unless you coat
them.

Rob, there are pool cue shafts made from Ash.
I have made a few.
The big reason you dont see them is that most players want that snow white
Maple and dont like the looks of Ash.
With Ash you can have the profile of a Meucci and the stiffness of a South
West.

I had one. It wasn't the look, but the feel of the grain that I
didn't like. If it was smoother, it may have been OK.

Frank, I use a new sealer material that is very hard and makes the shaft
feel smooth as silk.
Stays that way for a very long time with just simple cleaning and keeps the
chalk dust from getting into the wood grain. E-mail me if you want some
details.

What is the name of this new sealer material?

If I had to hazard a guess, I would say ...

- most snooker cues are made in the UK
- maple is a relatively rare wood in the UK compared to ash
- hence ash is a probably more cost-effective cuemaking material in
the UK
- shipping 100 high grade shaft blanks from the US to the UK might
possibly almost double their cost, say from $600 to perhaps around
$1000
- decent ash shaft blanks are probably much cheaper to come by in the
UK than maple
- they are both considered medium density woods
- density of maple and ash is roughly the same, on the order of
625-675 kg/m3

Of course I could be wrong ...

Also, alot of top snookerplayers claim they like to have straight
grain ash because the line helps them aiming.

I have a friend who purchased a cue stick made of ash, paid a pretty penny for
it, and brings it to local tournaments. It was a five-piece cue stick, BTW.
He said he bought the stick in England, which now makes sense to me after
reading your post, Tjander, since ash may be the choice of some snooker
players.

I have an ash shaft that I play golf with on a snooker table. It's 11mm
and very stiff, I can't imagine trying to play pool with it.

In my opinion, Ash is a stiffer wood than Maple and as most snooker cues
run from 8mm to 11mm the shaft would be very whippy using maple even though
the snooker shaft uses a European taper instead of a pro-taper. Ash is a
very open grain wood like Oak so is not nearly as comfortable in a closed
bridge. Most snooker players use an open bridge compared to most American
pool players who use a closed bridge henceforth the pool player have more
contact on the shaft so feel the open grain more. Also maple is prettier and
that is a big deal for most American pool players and of coarse tradition
has a large part in the equation.

I have Johnny eight ball stick with two shafts, maple with 13MM rip and ash shaft with 11 MM tip for playing American snooker. IMO it’s the tip you have to get use to. I could play 8 and 9 ball with ash snooker shaft, it pin points the spot and get lost of spin vs the maple 13MM shaft. That takes time to get use to on smaller table.
