Black Widow’ to go one-on-one vs the Magician
10/23/2001
World Games gold medal winner Jeanette Lee, the stunningly attractive pool
player from the US, has confirmed she will be in Manila as scheduled for
the LG Flatron Billiard Challenge against Efren "Bata" Reyes at Casino
Filipino, Parañaque on Nov. 3.
There were doubts last week that Lee, known the world over as "The Black
Widow" because of her flair for gothic all-black leather and lace attire
and her deadly skills at the table, would make the trip because of the
current international situation. However, reassurance from LG Collins, the
sponsor of the event, convinced her to visit Manila for the unique one-on-
one, race to 13.
Reyes, perhaps the greatest pool player of all-time and acknow-ledged as
"The Magician" because of his incredible shot-making, said he isn’t taking
Jeanette Lee lightly and has been practising daily for the challenge.
Reyes said Lee has, in the past, beaten some Filipino pool players and when
she is on a roll can clean up the table. She can run rack after rack
without a hint of a smile and is regarded as "cold and deadly" by her
opponents.
Reyes conceded that he could be "distracted" by the alluring Lee and would
have to keep his "concentration on the game to win." He said Jeanette Lee
would have a chance to beat him in a short race to five, but in a race to
thirteen he has the advantage.
Reyes promised it would be "an exciting and interesting duel" but he
doesn’t plan to be humiliated by losing to a woman in the LG Flatron
Challenge with total prize money of $15,000.
In a preliminary to the Reyes-Lee challenge, four of the country’s most
promising pool players will compete in a knockout battle of "The Rising
Stars" for total prize money of P100,000.
The Las Vegas-style setting of Casino Filipino has won praise from world-
renowned pool players who competed in the past including five-time world
champion Earl Strickland, European champion Ralf Souquet and US Open
champion Johnny Arche
I yawn at the prospect of an over-hyped contest between her and Efren.
Although Lee is a good player and Efren is not as shark as he used to be, the
black widow is still no match for a player of Efren's caliber.
I know very little about Jeanette Lee's personality, but given her
looks, her pool playing ability, and her good fortune in life it would
not surprise me at all if she was an incredibly self-centered snob.
Whether she is or not, I too "yawn at the prospect ...contest between
her and Efren" and for that matter between Efren and even the best
woman (Karen Corr). I think it would be a very lopsided affair, but
who knows there is a certain amount of chance in 9-ball.
You could say the same things about Earl the Pearl.
How do you personally find him??
> I yawn at the prospect of an over-hyped contest between her and Efren.
Don't worry, it wasn't scheduled for you. Go watch Nascar.
G. - enjoys watching Earl and Jeanette and thinks pool could use a lot more
shameless self promoting because the promoters certainly aren't getting the
job done
The match between Efren and Jeanette is great for pool. Both are
competitive players and most people like to be around the both of them. It
doesn't matter if the match is lopsided or not. At least they are doing
something that will likely enhance the public's positive perception of the
game. It would be a hoot if Efren has an off day and Jeanette wacks him.

You're right. What this sport really needs is many more high caliber
players that slink off into the shadows and remain anonymous. That will
certainly get the TV and Endorsement people running.
I don't see how someone to ascend to this level of play without being
somewhat proud of their accomplishments, focused on themselves to get the
time and opportunity to practice, and not have an understanding of what it
may take to get this sport to this next level. Self-promoting..... gosh, I
sure hope someone does.

Have you met Earl? I recall a story (probably in BD, perhaps P&B) a
number of years back about Earl being one of the few pros to visit
Mary Guarino in the hospital after her surgery. He brought her a
teddy bear or something. She was extremely appreciative. Anyone
remember that story? I wonder if, perhaps, Private Earl is quite
different from Evil Public Earl. Sometimes, even Public Earl is quite
different from Evil Public Earl. It'd be a bit easier for us, of
course, if he would wear a goatee or something distinguishing when he
switches into Evil Public Earl mode.

I yawn at NASCAR. What've you got for me, Gordon?

D'ya think Jeanette is helping pool or Jeanette?

jw (Lots of questions today.)
I find Nascar unwatchable, but Nascar has given my old home town of
Moorsville NC a new lease on life, so I shouldn't knock it. Try the new
Smallville show Tuesday nights. Superboy's hard to win girlfriend Lorna
should help you stop obcessing about Evil Earl. Clark is awfully cute too
if you like that sort of thing. (I'm betting 300 that Clark can put together
a 9 pack if he can keep from breaking the balls.) Unfortunately for you,
Smallvile is on at the same time as your favorite show, so you'll have to
crank up the VCR.

Yes.

how about some answers?
G. - reserving Tuesday night for playing at home while watching TV.
> Superboy's hard to win girlfriend Lorna [...]
That would be "Lana". That's been her name for about 60 years. One of
the unexplained mysteries is that many of the significant women in
Clark/Kalel/Superman's life have initials "LL".
$.02 -Ron Shepard <--don't kids read the classic literature any more?
You mean like Lex Luthor - hmmmmm, does that mean Superman is actually a
latent homosexual?
