I'm contemplating the task of restoring an old pool table. The interior
guts are all wooden and has a great sound when the balls return to the
collection box. Unfortunately, one of my three slate tops has broken into
three pieces (I suspect a moving accident by a former owner). The question
is "can slate be repaired to a satisfactory playing surface?". With all the
high tech epoxies glues, I was wondering if I located a flat surface and
glued the three pieces together would the result be satisfactory.

Does anyone have experience with repairing slate tops?

I've repaired broken slates before. Yes, you need a flat surface, I have a
pool table set up to the slate that I use for a work bench.
Take a sheet of plastic and lay it out on your bench. Use a two part epoxy to
mend the slate back together, once it has dried good, like at least over night,
Use more epoxy to fill in the cracks, only don't over fill them. Use car bondo
to fill in the rest of the cracks and a wide blade putty knife to smooth it
over. Your slate will be as close to new as possible. Handle it with care
putting the table back together and you'll never know it was broken.

You can repair slate on the table with a epoxy glue but make sure the slate is
flat and level
