There are some PCA player in it this year, I belive including the
"Pearl." I understand it will be the largest field of top players ever.

I'm watching Parica, Strickland, Reyes (of course), and Archer. But a
dark horse wouldn't surprize me in this tournament. Even the heavy
weights feel the pressure of the Open.

I'd like to see someone young who is just starting out, but more than
likely I'd have to put my money on Luat, the way he's been playing.

How did the issue of free entry for some of the players turn out? As I
understand the original problem, the PCA players were having to pay their
entry fees, while some of the PBT players weren't. Camel, the sponsor of
the event, was trying to show loyalty to the PBT for past support by
waiving entry fees for the top PBT players, and the PCA thought it was
unfair. As a tournament player, I can understand the PCA point of view;
why should they have to pay an entry fee that can be won by someone else,
while these other players don't have to pay an entry fee for you to have a
shot at winning? But I can also see where some kind of show of loyalty
between Camel and past-partner PBT might be appropriate.

I thought the best thing would have been to have the organizations (PBT or
Camel, or whoever) pay the entry fees, but I guess that solution was too
simple.

I checked here but only saw WPA world championship tournament
information. One thing I noticed is that Allison Fisher is not
representing the WPBA. Does that mean she is not defending, or that she
is representing some other (English?) pool association?

Yes, Allison Fisher will playing at the WPA World Championships, but
under Englands flag. I am guessing a complete list of participants will
pop up on the new Billiards Digest site sometime before the tournament.

Only about 20% of their site is up so far. More coming
online each day. It's coming up in sections. Try each
small headline (Black with white text). When each section
is ready, it will become an active link.

Looks like another site is going to make a try at "Chat".
This one will be java coded chat and looks to be ok. Pool
players just don't seem to care much about chat sites. Of
course if we had chat we could argue even faster.

Martel. He defeated Andam, 11-10, in what was obviously a close, but also
exciting matchup. I also met Jim Meador and Pat Stokes -- a real pleasure

Yes,
That kid Alex was here before the pros showed up for the Treasure Island
tournament in Minnesota. Took money off Wetch and 5000 off a local here
who had the 7-8.

Those "flippy's" play with the mind of a child. They're fascinated with
their control just like everyone who ever picked up a cue and started
learning. I'm not sure if I'm getting my point across but I think we
americans expect our ability. We don't show the same glee when we draw
a cueball, we expect it and move on to the next shot. You watch the
asians play and their eyes are wide with anticipating the shot, I think
the game is more exciting for them than it is for us.

Some US Open Highlights:

180 player ladder - largest field ever - by far.

Played in the new Chesapeake Convention Center. Everybody was freezing.
The sweatshirt & jacket Vendors did well (my guess) because of the
temperatures inside.

Because of the number of players, as soon as a table was free, a match
was started on it. No rest for those of us who TRIED to attend every
session.

Frank Glenn bought a new Jack Justice 3x6 case. I hate him. His Parrot
sticks are beautiful. I wouldn't play him because of his sticks. I can't
beat a man with a pretty stick.

Went to Q-Masters Sunday morning (7:30am) to watch some action. Ginky,
Archer, Coltrain, Tang Ho, Andam, Alex, Watson and others were there
having some "fun". Alex is a real trip. They were tossing quarters at
the foot spot. Alex couldn't lose, although he was giving a large
distance handicap. Yes, there were some good games, but I don't have the
facts (and I wouldn't post them anyway.)

I was impressed with Strickland's victory speech. He admitted to his...
ahhh.. past behavior, but praised the greatness of Reyes saying he was
still 10 matches behind him over the years they have played. I have
never seen Strickland so complimentary to everything and everybody. Earl
said he would not miss another US Open. I believe Earl just might be the
best 9-ball player on tour at this time.

Earl love the crowds and bright lights. Reyes does not. I believe this
made a big difference. Efren loses under the TV lights. Let's face it-
2nd place in 95, 96 and 97 - all finals under the lights and delays of
TV coverage. Maybe I'm making excuses for him because I like his
conduct.

Mackey admitted to past financial problems (why not?). Made a long
speech about unity in the future. Thanked PCA players, etc.

Fantastic International field of players. Canada's boys are good. Watch
out for Chris Wood in the future. Horsfall uses a snooker cue. Weak
break (probably because of snooker background.) Extremely accurate
shooter, but conservative.

Two Russian players. Not too bad either.

I have lots of pictures going on my site from the Open. Great picture of
Earl shouting "FOUR! FOUR!" Also captured the great Reyes smile. Give me
a couple of days.

I just found out why Reyes touches the back of his neck after a bad
shot. He is "wiping the monkey" off his back. A superstition, not a
nervous habit.

Sorry everybody in RSB couldn't be there.

As a beginner, I really enjoyed watching Horsfall play. It was a good
lesson in how much can be done within the "limitations" of an open
bridge. Horsfall played like a machine in the early part of his match
against Parica and jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Then the wheels fell
off, and he let Parica all the way back in. He seemed rattled until
Parica tied the match up on the hill. Then he bore down and put
together a good runout to end it. That was a fun match!
