Hi all! Anyone with some stories about this great road player? Whats U.J. up
to now? Did U.J. beat Fats in the Oldtimers Tournament? Espn did not show
it, so pox on them. They can show a bunch of clowns running after a
basketball though! Please let me hear your input. Thanks!

I think U.J. PUckett is up to his eyeballs in dirt right about now. I
believe he passed away a few years ago although I could be wrong.

The only story I have was when he visited New Orleans infamous, "Sports
Palace" a popular stop off for road players for decades. About 20 years
ago, U.J. walked in with a brown kraft grocery bag filled with money. He
dumped the money on the center pool table and exclaimed to all that were
within shouting distance that "Anyone of you can play for all or part of
this money, so step on up." I think he scared everyone including our own
Earl Heisler. No one wanted any part of his action.
He picked up his money and placed it on top of the light and started hitting
some balls on a recently recovered GCI table and I remember him having a
very desirable stroke, one similar to Mike Massey, Scotty Townsend or maybe
Larry Nevel. As I remembered, he appeared to be at least as tall as Mike
Massey. He looked to be about 60 years old at that time.
Regards,
JoeyA

The Sob busted me out in an all nighter in Hot Springs, Ark in 61, had
him, he got away, then cleaned my clock. He could play, like Fatty
could play back in the 50's and early 60' as well. They were both fine
hustlers, fine players, not great players, but very hard to beat. That
TV match, geezes fatty could not run 3 friggen balls then, everyone in
da joint could beat the guy left handed drunk. I can only imagine why
you did not see that match is probably neither one of them could run 2
balls and it was a stinko.

UJ was a real dork, had a hair cut, and wore this stupid dumb ass white
hat that made him look like an old cherokee injun standing at an
Oklahoma railroad station ready to play the fiddle for dimes when the
passengers got off. That hat was about as hokey as McArthurs corn cobb
pipe he never smoked but wore to stand out and been seen, same thing.

Mr. Puckett definitely passed on. At the time of the Legendary Stars of
Pocket Billiards in 1982, he was well into his 70's, and the oldest
participant. The only one of that bunch remaining today is Arthur "Babe"
Cranfield who I believe is now 90.

I never knew the "dork" part. He was indeed a character. He like two
things best in life, he told me. Pool and fishing. He played pool and
made enough money to go fishing, and then fished until the money ran
out. Good guy.

He had an incredible break. I was watching him at the same time Fats,
Jersey Red, Stevens and a bunch of other old-timers were playing in
Houston, and he broke best even though he was older than the rest
(except maybe Fats.) In fact, I had left the pool hall one night just
before the Houston police busted a tournament he was in. I think he,
Fats and a lot of others had to "go downtown" and get booked. Of
course, they were already downtown, so it wasn't a big deal, I guess.

As for the hat, it made him look just like U.J.Puckett. Imagine that.

I spent almost a year on the road with UJ. We hustled all over the US.
He was a great player and also a good cook.

We stopped at a bar in a very small town in east Texas late one night.
Pucket said "Billy, go in and look around."
I did and all that was in there was the bartender and one customer. I came
out and told Pucket. I was ready to leave.
Pucket decided to have a look himself so I went to sleep in the back of the
car.

Around closing time (two AM) he was finally back. I asked what he was doing
in there all that time.
He only said "won 2400.00". He was that good as a hustler.

I could tell a hundred stories about his antics but not enough space.

Sincerely,

Bill Stroud

"Billy", that was a nice tease the $2400.00 and all and I like it but would
you mind telling us a little more about that year on the road along with
what year it was and:
1. The most dangerous encounter.
2. The highest that you and he ever bet on the road. (most money lost and
won and with whom).
3. The funniest thing that happened on the road.
4. The worst thing that happened on the road.
5. The best comeback (moneywise) and the outcome.

Any one of those would do but I am kind of greedy when it comes to road
stories besides U.J. looms in my mind as a one of a kind pool hustler even
though I only saw him the one time.
Thanks,
JoeyA

Tell us how much Jimbo Lucusio importio paid you to go to China, to
sell out all of the usa cue makers, and to virtually destroy their
companies, by teachin da chinks, how to knock off an copy our secrets.
Stand up and be proud of what you did here, tell it to the world. How
big a ho are you, how much did you got, 30 pieces of silver I bet.
Wave da flag now, usa, usa, buy chink. All those jobs, left american,

I'll share this quote just for the fun of it. When Mosconi was asked (circa
1983) what he thought of UJ he said, "He is everything that is wrong with
pool."

Mark0 <--likes road stories too

Not saying anything positive or negative about either Mr. Mosconi or Mr.
Puckett, I'm guessing that U.J. probably didn't care much about what Willie
thought of him. He may even have enjoyed having that effect on him. ;>) I
think in many ways, we see some of the same relationships among players
today.

but was it U.J. Puckett's? that's what made it interesting for me...what
happens to the cues of the great road players/hustlers/pros? are they left
in a closet until an estate sale comes for them? are they passed along to
unsuspecting grandchildren? ebay?

Tell us how much money you took from Stealth promoting their imported
jump cues. If I remember correctly you made a big point of your
relationship with Stealth, the point being, according to you, that you
would not have been hired were it not for your skill and
accomplishments. I remember you doing several day's worth of
exhibitions at the Stealth booth, where ALL the products are imported,
and I never once saw you protesting the origin of the goods that were
paying for your services.

You also brag about going to other countries to do exhibitions.
Apparently their money is good enough for you to take for your
services but others should not do the same.

The truth is that you are a hypocrite and you understand nothing of
global economies. The 152 IQ you boast of (which I believe to be
untrue) must be closer to a negative 152 as evidenced by such nonsense
as you post above.

I think a lot of them are sold to pawn shops or to other players on the road
when the owner goes bust and needs gas money.

Probably true...pawn shops: where at least one can get $30 for something
that helped one lose much more than that.
